Travel > Eating Out in Mallorca
Posted: Jul.06.2007 @ 1:14 pm | Lasted edited: Jul.06.2007 @ 6:29 am

Mallorcan cuisine makes use of lots of local ingredients based mostly on pork, fish and vegetables doused with plenty of garlic and olive oil. Those who want to experience genuine Mallorcan cuisine would do well to look for some of their specialties. Mallorcan specialties include:
● sausages - sobrasada (raw minced pork with hot red pepper), botifarro (cured pork with blood), and spicy chorizo (although this is originally from mainland from Spain)
● jamon serrano – a special whole cured ham displayed nicely on a slicing board
● frit mallorqui – pig’s innards fried with potatoes, onions, and tomatoes (It tastes good but not for the quesy)
● tumbet – Mallorcan style ratatouille of aubergines, potatoes and peppers cooked in olive oil
● sopes mallorquines - thick broth of thinly-sliced brown bread and vegetables
● llom amb col - pork wrapped in cabbage with pine nuts and raisins
● lechona asada - roast suckling pig
● helado – ice cream
● flan - creme caramel
● gato de almendras – almond cake with toasted almond ice cream
● ensaimada – fluffly spiral pastry filled with different fillings dusted with sugar on top
● cheeses – Mahon (from Menorca), Manchego (from mainland Spain)

Travel > Savoring Italian Food
Posted: Jul.06.2007 @ 1:07 pm | Lasted edited: Jul.06.2007 @ 6:17 am

CURRENTLY billeted at Jolly Hotel Leonardo da Vinci right across the Vatican and the setting of Mission Impossible: III, I’m planning not to eat here but to savor all the Italian dishes that I can find across Rome. I only eat breakfast here at the hotel which is not really exciting for me because it is just like a typical American breakfast – buns, coffee and all that. There’s no excitement in that.

And so I walked across streets intending to savor all the street food that I could find the whole day. This must be a great vacation alone because I really had a jolly good time strolling the city thoroughfares. I wanted to taste something different, something foreign from my hometown in Jersey City. I wanted to taste real authentic Italian food.

The most common thought that would snap to one’s mind is pizza. Anywhere in the world – whether you’re in Asia, pizza is really associated as being Italian. Of course, I didn’t want to eat pizza in some Pizza Hut, I wanted it to be really Italian. So I headed to Pizzera Il Maratoneta in Via dei Volsci corner Via del Sardi at the San Lorenzo area. Lots of students and families dine here and for the first time that day, I saw a real Italian family up close as well as three college girls who shyly took a look at me and wondered why I was alone. Although we all sport Caucasian features, locals here tend to distinguish tourists from themselves.

Travel > Ile-de-France – The Heart of France
Posted: Jul.06.2007 @ 1:03 pm | Lasted edited: Jul.06.2007 @ 6:16 am

Historically the very core of France is Paris, starting from a little island on the middle of Seine River inhabited by fishermen more than 2000 years ago. Julius Caesar named the Island Lutetia and the people living there Parisii. As time passed by the small community of fishermen grew and spilled over to the other side of the riverbanks and with the name eventually evolving to Paris. From the city of Paris, France grew in circles around it with the immediate region surrounding the city called Ile-de-France. Although France has grown really large as more and more provinces were added, Ile-de-France remains remains the heart of the country with much of its history residing there.

Tourists who have but a few days to tour France would do well to simply choose to tour Ile-de-France. Aside from seeing the sights of Paris side trips to the rest of Ile-de-France will bbe more than enough to keep you busy and fascinated.

Travel > Beach Etiquettes And Then Some in Menorca

THE beaches in Menorca, Spain are undoubtedly one of the best the country has to offer. It is impressive so much even to the international community that the UNESCO has designated the whole island off the coast of the Spanish mainland as a biosphere reserve. With that designation, you can be sure that you will only frolic at some of the cleanest beaches in the world in Menorca. If you’ve just heard of this place, think Ibiza. Ibiza is one of the Balearic islands and Menorca is the biggest of these islands. If Ibiza is a place of nonstop partying, then Menorca is the place of nonstop nature appreciation.

The best travel spot in Menorca
And nope, I’m not exaggerating. Anywhere in Menorca, there are leaflets or wooden signs reminding you not to litter around. The tourism authorities in Menorca, Spain are strict in implementing the anti-littering policy all around the island. They are stricter here compared to other more liberal-minded populaces like those living in Costa del Sol for example.
There are a dozen rules that you need to abide in Menorca, Spain although none of these are intended to limit your fun. If you only abide with these rules, I guarantee that your vacation in Menorca will really be maximum enjoyment.
Take for instance this rule: In Menorca, you are not allowed to drive your rented off road vehicle to other areas that are not designated as such. This is an obviously simple rule that is not hard to follow, right? It is practical that driving off road vehicles to the sandy beach will not only endanger the lives of the beachgoers but will also litter the sand with mud coming from your wheels.
Also in Menorca, even your little children must abide by the rules. They say that teaching proper manners to the young will help them mold into responsible adults. Remind your children not to remove any wild flora at any place in the island. That is one of the reasons why Menorca, Spain is declared as a biosphere reserve.
And even if you’re camping out in the designated areas at any Menorca beach, please be reminded that it is illegal to start fires for the obvious reason. So just be innovative, put on the thickest of jackets and start cuddling each other.
Synonymous to that rule is not to leave cigarette ash and stubs just anywhere. The government of Menorca, Spain is selling disposable ashtrays at 2 cents for the purpose. Now, are we still having fun? Don’t be discouraged though. In Menorca, you are not allowed to litter but you are allowed to skinny dip. Yeah, you’ve heard that right. Some of the most prestigious beaches in Menorca, Spain have secluded areas that will allow some privacy for you and your loved one or if you are a group of five girlfriends, then a little wild fun will not do any harm, right?
Some of the amazing beaches in Menorca are Punta Prima, Binibequer, Cala en Porter, Son Bou-San Jaime, Santo Tomas and Cala Trebaluger. Get ready and enjoy your stay here.
