business > How to Choose Quartz for Household Uses
Posted: Feb.20.2008 @ 1:27 am

Quartz is a mineral that's not in danger of being depleted any time soon. It's the most widely available mineral in the world and is abundant on the earth's crust. This makes it the ideal mineral for household uses. Use it for everything from remodeling to electrical appliances. Follow these steps to choose quartz for household uses.

Step 1:
Choose quartz-halogen lights for a longer lasting light bulb throughout your household. Quartz-halogen lamps come in a modern design that are dramatically brighter.

Step 2:
Obtain an outdoor heater that is designed using quartz. The Infratech electric quartz patio heater produces infrared radiant energy that only heats the area in which it is aimed at to save electricity. It can also be installed in tighter fitting areas away from children and pets because there aren't any open flames.

Step 3:
Buy quartz to replace your granite countertops. Quartz countertops are more scratch resistant, easier to clean and aren't damaged by household chemicals such as hairspray. It also has greater uniformity of colors because of the engineering process utilized in manufacturing solid surface countertops with quartz.

Step 4:
Purchase pressure gauges made out of quartz. Quartz has piezoelectric properties, making it able to generate an electrical charge with the application of pressure for a number of uses.

Step 5:
Consider quartz for the inside walls of your shower and bathtub. It is impervious to heat, doesn't scratch easily and is simple to care for, making it an excellent, durable choice for showers.

Step 6:
Wear jewelry made of quartz. It's less expensive than other more pricey stones and can be just as pretty as diamonds. It's also easy to care for, very durable and comes in a variety of colors for many artistic uses in jewelry making.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when replacing any quartz-halogen bulbs in your household because they're very hot.

business > Elegant Limestone Tiles - Create A Beautiful Floor!
Posted: Feb.20.2008 @ 1:26 am

Natural stone has been used for flooring for hundreds of years. There are many choices, marble, and granite being the most popular. A new natural stone tile has entered the market - limestone. It is elegant in appearance and has become a very popular choice for homeowners.

Available in a variety of shades of light brown, beige, and yellow very few natural stones provide the elegance and rich appearance of limestone. The most common surface finish for limestone is matte, making it an excellent choice where moisture may be present, as the matte finish provides for a non-slip surface.

Installing limestone tile is no different than installing any natural stone product such as granite or marble. A thin set mortar should be used and the joints between tiles should be filled with grout. As limestone is a permeable natural stone - water can penetrate it. Therefore, it is important that the limestone tile and the grout be sealed with a very high quality, penetrating sealer to avoid having the tile permanently stained due to spills or other grime.

Limestone lends itself well to creating complex geometric patterns, as it is available in a variety of square and rectangular sizes in thicknesses of 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch thick. It is easy to cut, much easier than granite or marble, but still requires the use of a wet saw with a diamond-impregnated blade. When cut, limestone has a relatively smooth edge, which can be easily filed or honed to a smooth finish .

As with granite and marble it is important when purchasing your limestone tiles to pay attention to the lot numbers. Any specific lot number means that the individual limestone tiles were cut from the same block of limestone and should provide a color and grain match. Always remember that one of the things that makes any natural stone floor rich and unique is that no two pieces of natural stone are the same in color or grain. Because of the grain and color differences, it is important that you always buy extra tiles, as any specific lot number may not be available a few days after your original purchase. If you are installing a basic grid pattern, it is recommended that you purchase at least 10% more tile than the square footage calculation would indicate. For a diamond pattern the recommendation is 20% more than the square footage calculation.

Of course nothing is ever perfect. With all the positive attributes of limestone there is one negative. Limestone is a very porous material and even if heavily sealed with a penetrating sealer it should not be used in kitchens or full bathrooms - bathrooms with showers or tubs. Building codes in many areas prohibit the use of limestone tile in restaurant kitchens.

Natural limestone tile is an excellent choice for hallways, foyers, and dining rooms. Its elegance will last for generations, enhance any home, and its neutral colors will compliment any choice of decor.

business > Soapstone Care & Maintenance
Posted: Feb.18.2008 @ 1:51 am

 What Is Soapstone?

Soapstone is a metamorphic rock. There are two different materials popularly called Soapstone. The first being Talc , softest mineral on earth mostly used in the manufacturing of cosmetics, refractory materials, sculptures, and everyday items such as toothpaste, baby powder and even chewing gum. What we manufacture at M. Teixeira Soapstone is an alternate material known as Steatite.

The rock Steatite (also called Soapstone) is the material we use for our countertops, sinks, masonry heaters, flooring, and many other architectural applications. Steatite was also used to "coat" the famous "Christ the Redeemer" statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Steatite is composed of several minerals, but the most abundant is Talc. Steatite, because of its additives is harder than Talc, hence suitable for the applications cited above. Soapstone (steatite) in its initial state only comes in shades of gray, unlike Talc, which is available in a variety of colors.

This natural quarried stone is softer than most other naturally occuring minerals. Although soft, Soapstone is a very dense (non-porous) stone ; more so than marble, slate, limestone and even granite. Since Soapstone is impenetrable , it will not stain, no liquid will permeate its surface. Other stones, including granite, have a propensity to soil; this is why Soapstone (Steatite) is widely used in chemistry lab-tops and acid rooms.

Fireplaces and Ovens

Our partners have been manufacturing massive soapstone fireplaces with great success for more than a decade. Soapstone derives its exceptional suitability for stove building material through its composition of Talc and Magnestite. These particular qualities were discovered in Nordic countries many decades ago. Its excellent heat-storage and heat-conductivity make soapstone more suitable than any other material for stove building. The air remains clean, the floor and walls are comfortably warm, and the airs humidity remains stable.

Soapstone radiates even warmth, which is repeatedly pointed out by doctors and biologists to be beneficial for human health. All these factors will convince you over and over that a Soapstone-stove can provide a zest for life, which allows you become fit and active.

Other Uses of Soapstone

More commonly in Brazil, soapstone is used as cook tops, grills, pots and bake trays. A softer variety of soapstone, the mineral Talc, is used for carvings, chalk, etc.

Maintenance

The only maintenance required for soapstone (steatite), is the application of mineral oil, to enhance the natural darkening process the stone goes through. Once mineral oil is applied, the stone will turn into a very dark charcoal gray, sometimes black. Often times, varieties of soapstone will keep a hint of green. Steatite (soapstone) is virtually heat proof and used in the construction of masonry heaters because of its excellent thermal qualities. It is also used in creating pizza stones, cooking pots, oven interiors and numerous related applications. You can take a pot right from your stove and place it on your soapstone countertops without harm.

Oiling the Countertops:

We recommend oiling your countertops to ensure that the stone will evenly darken.  The oil is not sealing or protecting the stone, it is only "speeding up" the natural darkening process that steatite (soapstone) goes through.  Soapstone is non-porous and unlike marbles and granites does not need to be sealed.

There isn't a set rule of how often you should oil the countertops.  Oiling too little or too much will not damage the stone in any way.  We recommend oiling the countertops as soon as the previous coat of mineral oil has started fading away (evaporating).  Once you oil the countertops for the first time you will see the stone will become much darker.  A few days from the first oiling, most soapstone will lighten back up. You can re-treat your countertops every time this happens.  The soapstone will take approximately 3 coats of mineral oil to reach its final color, getting darker after every oiling.  Every time you oil your countertops, the stone will hold the oil longer than the last time, until about the 6th or 8th month the stone will stay permanently dark.

You can oil the countertops any way you like, you can spread some oil on the counters, then rub it with a rag or you can put the oil on the rag and oil the counters.  To make the next oiling easier, keep the same rag in a zip lock bag, you will see that the rag will soak in the oil and spread easier on the countertops.

Immediately after you've oiled the soapstone, you can remove all the excess, until the countertops don't fell slick.  There is no such thing as "let the oil soak in", remember, soapstone is impermeable, nothing penetrates the surface.

Cleaning the Countertops

Any common household cleaner can be used to clean soapstone counter surfaces. Chemicals and acids do not harm it. However, we do recommend that you use regular soap and water because harsher solvents may remove the mineral oil treatment, therefore generating more maintenance. Soapstone, being softer than granite and marble, is also more prone to scratches. The great advantage is that any scratches can be easily removed with a light sanding and/or mineral oil.

Removing Scratches

Eventually the countertops will get scratched. Most scratches can be hidden by lightly applying some mineral oil.  If you get a deep scratch in there, you will need to do some sanding.  With a small piece of 120-grit sandpaper, sand the scratch area in a circular motion until the scratch is almost gone, then using a 220-grit sandpaper do the same thing but this time using water.  Clean up the countertop and oil that section again.  Sanding will remove the mineral oil, and remember that the stone will take 3 coats to reach the final color.  You may notice a slight color difference on that spot, do not worry you can oil in the morning, then again in the afternoon and so on until the color evens out.

business > Slate Countertop - Pros and Cons
Posted: Feb.18.2008 @ 1:50 am

Slate offers many advantages. It looks great and has plenty to offer over some of the other solid stone choices you may be considering. It is a classic, upscale material that brings drama and beauty into your home.

Warm Look

This stone exudes a warmth and texture that is second to none. Slate's versatility can be interpreted as log-cabin rustic or sleek cosmopolitan-contemporary depending on its neighboring design elements. Surface texture stems from the composition of shale and clay as well as the method by which it is quarried, splitting slate from the mountin by hand allows it to separate naturally into uneven sheets, which results in its characteristic cleft surface.

Surprisingly, this majestic stone can be relatively inexpensive. A typical slate slab will be comparable in price to that of an inexpensive granite slab. The tile format, however, which ranges from the smallest mosaic to enormous 2-foot tiles, will often cost less than many ceramics.

Slate Color Variations

One can almost envision the creative names of colors this stone embodies, such as Indian Autumn, California Gold, China Lotus, Violet Garden, Sea Green, Copper, Rust, and Earth (just to name a few).

Exotic, colorful slate is imported from overseas, as its domestic cousin has a tendency to remain in the less than exciting shades of somber gray, green, and plum. India, Africa, China, and South America produce some of the most dramatic and vivid colors. It is not uncommon for plant fossils to be found on the slate's surface. When discovered, set aside these naturally artistic pieces for use as the focal point of your design.

Slate Countertops Finish and Texture

Options for assorted surface finishes and textures add to the versatility of this stone. They include natural cleft, honed, calibrated, and polished. Slate is available in the standard square tile format as well as tumbled, quillotine cut, mosaic, and random flagging.

Functionality

Employed as a countertop, slate is exceptionally dense and strong. Acidic substances will not harm its surface and once sealed it remains virtually maintenance free. When considering slate as a countertop material it is advisable to choose a tile with minimal cleft or a honed finish. Because slate countertops are soft, it is important to have the edges rounded. Square corners are more likely to chip than rounded surfaces, so designing your kitchen with edges in mind can help you get the longest life from your slate.

Choosing slate with the traditional natural cleft surface will leave you and your guests dealing with an uneven surface and therefore teetering glasses will be encountered.

There are different types of slate countertops with different price ranges. Black slate is usually the most expensive, with red slate not far behind. Brown, green, gray and blue or purple-toned slate are all used in countertops, so you will have quite a variety of color choices if you opt for slate.

Sealing

Sealing will guarantee its carefree use, but it may be prudent to experiment on a sample prior to sealing the entire countertop. Penetrating sealers typipcally do not alter the surface appearance, so it may become necessary to use an additional topcoat sealer, or color enhancer, if you want to bring out the deeper tones from within the stone. Topcoat finishes are available in matte, low sheen, and high gloss. When striving to maintain the stone's natural appearance, be sure to choose the matte finish.

business > CNC Cutting Machine
Posted: Feb.15.2008 @ 6:28 am

A good quality CNC cutting machine has a cutting table that covers the area bounded by a length of four feet and a width of eight feet. A quality table can handle satisfactorily a standard 4 x 8 plate of metal, wood, plastic, glass, or stone. A table that lacks a sufficient length or width will make it necessary for the operator to repeatedly reposition the plate. Operators of the CNC cutting machine refer to such repositioning as indexing.

A good basic CNC cutting machine does both plasma and oxyfuel cutting. Refinements on a basic cutting machine might provide it with the ability to perform other functions, functions such as:

  • spotting holes for drilling
  • drilling aluminum
  • cutting a shape in the sides or end of tubing
  • outing wooden shapes

Other modifications on a CNC cutting machine might be directed at installation of the equipment for laser or water jet cutting.

The selection of a CNC cutting machine will be primarily determined by the nature of cutting that will be performed by the machine operator. For some operations, it will be necessary to do only straight cutting. For other operations, the cutting machine must perform bevel cutting. Bevel cutting allows the operator to trim, reduce, shave, and pare the material in the plate.

Both types of cutting will subject the CNC cutting machine to a fair amount of wear and tear. The manufacturer therefore needs to purchase a machine with adequate customer support. Such support should include the availability of spare parts. An absence of spare parts could require that the electronics of the CNC cutting machine undergo a retrofitting.

A need for retrofitting would deprive the operator of important production time. The need for retrofitting would diminish the quantity of goods that could be sold to the consumer. The need for retrofitting leads to a decrease in the amount of time that the operator will be spending at the CNC cutting machine. That is why the availability of spare parts for a malfunctioning CNC cutting machine remains one of the two chief concerns of the manufacturer. A second prime concern is the size of the cutting table.

The operator of a CNC cutting machine that needs to spend a large percent of time indexing will not have much time to spend on the actual cutting. Hence, the manufacturer will have much less product. Fewer products from the manufacturing facility translate into fewer products on the shelf. Consequently, the need for operators to spend time indexing can prove a detriment to the company's bottom line. A good sales volume reflects the well-planned purchase of a CNC cutting machine.

business > Sandstone Light For Interior and Exterior Application
Posted: Feb.15.2008 @ 6:24 am

Sandstone light is unique nice. Not only because it is the flexible sandstone. Sandstone light is also a visual sensation - Rock formations naturally grown in 40 million years bestow every object with an exclusive and unmistakable character. Timeless fascination even in minutes detail.

Our environment- friendly procedure has made it possible to slice sandstone from stone blocks in thin layers of just 3 mm. The resulting Sandstone Light is incomparably light, weighing just 5 kg/m˛. Ideal for any building project. Special base layers render Sandstone Light mouldable and make it decidedly practical for further processing. It can be perfectly adapted to any perceivable shape - curves, domes, depressions or edges. Continuous and joint less.

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-size mineral or rock grains. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar because these are the most common minerals in the Earth's crust. Like sand, sandstone may be any color, but the most common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, gray and white. Since sandstone beds often form highly visible cliffs and other topographic features, certain colors of sandstone have been strongly identified with certain regions.

Some sandstones are resistant to weathering, yet are easy to work. This makes sandstone a common building and paving material. Because of the hardness of the individual grains, uniformity of grain size and friability of its structure, sandstone is an excellent material from which to make grindstones, for sharpening blades and other implements. Non-friable sandstone can be used to make grindstones for grinding grain.

Rock formations that are primarily sandstone usually allow percolation of water and are porous enough to store large quantities, making them valuable aquifers. Fine-grained aquifers, such as sandstones, are more apt to filter out pollutants from the surface than are rocks with cracks and crevices, such as limestones or other rocks fractured by seismic activity.

business > What's The Best Type Of Marble For Your Kitchen Floor?
Posted: Jan.31.2008 @ 1:43 am

Marble flooring is one of the more popular types of flooring tile that people use nowadays in their homes. Although the use of marble as flooring tile dates back to the time of the Greeks and Romans, it is now finding its way back to people's homes, and more specifically, to their kitchens.

What is marble?

Marble is actually the result of the exposure of limestone to high temperature and pressure, causing it to crystallize into the natural material that we now know as marble. It comes in a variety of colors, designs and patterns, as well as shapes and sizes, making it very ideal for use as tiles for flooring, countertop, and other similar applications. However, what makes marble tiles so appealing to be used as flooring tiles is its characteristic of being durable and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. It is a durable material, making it easy for it to resist stains very well. This is probably one of the main reasons why marble is considered to be one of the best materials for flooring.

Marble as kitchen flooring

Although marble can be used for flooring in the kitchen, not all of them offer the same type of quality and effectiveness as with some other types of marble, which is why there are only certain marble types that would be considered as the best ones to be used for such a purpose.

Marble comes in a variety of grades, depending on how durable and resistant it is to breakage, with Grade A marble being the most durable and resistant. If you are going to use marble for your kitchen floor, you must make sure that the grade of the marble that you are getting is of the highest one, especially since you are going to use it in an area where there will be a lot of possible contact with the floor through different mediums, such as the appliances, kitchen utensils, food ingredients, as well as liquid substances. You need to make sure that the type of marble that you are using in the kitchen is durable and resistant enough to handle a few bumps, scrapes and slams, in order to avoid major damage to the marble flooring like cracks and breakage.

It is also wise to use marble types that need the least amount of reinforcement, which means that it will be able to handle stains, as well as breakage, with very minimal support from sealants and protections. This is important if you want your marble flooring to last in the kitchen, especially since the kitchen is the place where a lot of mishaps and accidents occur, and in consistent durations.

One such marble type that offers most of that is the "tumbled" marble. It not only is durable enough to handle breakage, but is also resistant enough that it can handle the possible stains and damage with minimal support, but this does not mean that you can just leave a spill on it. You still need to take care of the marble flooring regardless of its ability to resist stain.

However, these are not the only characteristics that make tumbled marble so appropriate for kitchen flooring. This type of marble is considered as appropriate for an area such as the kitchen due to the fact that tumbled marble has a less slippery finish, thereby reducing the chances of accidents due to slips from happening. "Honed"marble is also less slippery, due to its dull, matter surface. However, this type of marble is more susceptible to stains and abrasions, making it a problem to have in the kitchen.

Once your new flooring has been installed by a specialist, you need to make sure that you only use cleaners, sealers and polishers that were designed specifically for use on marble floor tile. Before you start cleaning, there are several things to think of.

First of all you need to give the area a good sweeping to remove any loose dirt. Then, after mixing the cleaning product according to instructions, ensure that you are using a clean, non-abrasive cloth or sponge to avoid scratching the surface. You should allow the floor to dry off before allowing foot traffic. This need not be followed by rinsing or wiping.

Marble tile floor is suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, hallways and foyers: it will last for a very long time with simple care and maintenance. It can also transform any uninteresting space into a great room. The initial purchase cost may seem quite high, especially for foreign sourced tiles, but if you invest a bit of time looking for a good deal you should be able to find a suitable supplier. Marble floor tile is a great option to consider if you are looking at replacing flooring or updating your home.

business > Granite Countertop Colors
Posted: Jan.29.2008 @ 12:58 am

Granite, like marble and other stones, is as old as the earth. Granite is the second hardest stone (diamond being the first) and is created from molten rock. It is found world wide, in countries such as Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States. In addition to its strength, granite is a very beautiful stone that adds color and warmth to a room. A frequent choice of designers for decades, granite countertops have now become popular with the public. There are literally hundreds of granite countertop colors including whites, browns, reds, greens, blues and black. The variations of the minerals in each base color creates hundreds more possible variations on the basic colors.

Home remodelers and home builders have experienced an explosion in the demand for granite countertops in kitchens and bathrooms. The beauty and warmth of granite makes it an ideal material for aesthetic appeal in home design. The natural beauty found in granite countertop colors complement any most tone of wood or style of cabinetry from rustic country to more contemporary styles.

Brown and beige tones are the most popular, as they work well with many kitchen color schemes and allows for flexibility in future redecorating. Today, the black and blue colors are becoming increasingly popular, with prices that reflect the demand. Some of the granite colors exhibit ""movement"" or a design within the natural color, while others possess small patterns . The combination of color and movement means that no two countertops look alike.

Opinions regarding the color that is best for a kitchen will vary. Dark cabinets can be warmed up with a light colored stone, while light colored cabinets can be anchored with a dark stone. When choosing the granite that will be added to a kitchen decor, it is best not to make selections from "chips" that the decorator or major retailer has on hand. There is so much variation in the color and movement in each stone that it is important to go to the supplier and look at each slab. The slab needs to be reserved at the time of decision, or it may not be available at a later time.

When shopping for granite countertop colors, it's not possible to locate a match for a specific name of a color found at a model home or mentioned in a decorating magazine. There is not a set list of names, or industry entity that regulates the names to be used. The country of origin will have its own name for each color, and then each of the suppliers, fabricators, installers and retailers will also have their own names. The numerous variations of color in each slab creates additional opportunities for new names. It takes research and visits to the suppliers to help simplify the process. Remember, it's not the name of the granite color that matters, it's the mineral qualities present in the stone.
