Renovating a kitchen begins with an idea or design theme and involves choosing those materials that will further the design. Of course, it is most effective to choose those elements that will maximize design dollars. Countertop materials come in all varieties and within all budgets; and choosing the material that makes the most sense comes down to the type of lifestyle that you live and the tone that you want to set in your home.
While granite and ceramic tile continue to be popular choices when it comes to countertops, the soapstone countertop is another viable and effective option for outfitting your home with the best in form and function.
Soapstone - much like marble or granite - is harvested from quarries; it is considered a satellite stone and is made up of mostly magnesite, dolomite, chlorite, and talc. Soapstone has enjoyed a long life on this planet; its origins date back three to four hundred years ago. Its properties have lent it to a variety of uses throughout the generations; and for many of the same reasons it is still commonly used today.
As its name suggests, soapstone is soft to the touch and resembles the smooth feeling of dry soap. It is an easily pliable material that has been used in the making of everything from vases to sculptures.
Today, the soapstone countertop is another common household material that utilizes this flexible stone. The natural properties of soapstone make it the perfect material for the making of countertops. Because it is a natural stone it is durable and resilient against heat, scratches, most stains, and even impact.
Because soapstone is inert, alkalis, as well as acids, do not affect it. This is not the case with granite, marble. or slate and for this reason the soapstone countertop has been widely used. Its longevity is another of its major advantages and experts agree that owners can support that longevity through the use of sealants.
When the countertop is first installed, therefore, it is important to seal the stone with mineral oil or a stone sealant which will bring out the dark richness to the stone's natural color and also work as a protective layer on the stone's surface.
But however resilient it is, the soapstone countertop should still be cared for meticulously in order to maintain the integrity of the material. Spills should be mopped up immediately so as not to allow any moisture to permeate the stone. And daily maintenance should include the wiping down of the countertops with only mild or natural cleanser and warm, clean water - using a soft rag to wash the surface.
Another option for taking care of the soapstone countertop is to use standard mineral oil that can be obtained from any pharmacy. Rubbing it onto the stone will darken the stone to nearly black; and even after the passage of time one may easily return the soapstone countertop to its original grayish blue color by using sandpaper.
Like other natural stone material, the soapstone countertop - when cared for properly - can offer many years of beauty and durability.

The use of marble floor tiles as a building material has had a quite long and famous career, as it has had extensive uses in the courtyards of the Roman Empire, in the palaces and estates of Renaissance Europe, and up to more recent times.
Marble floor tiles have become more and more popular, not only for residential applications, such as hallways, foyers, living rooms and in bathrooms, but also for commercial projects with similar uses. One of the best attributes marble tiles can extend to a project is the aura of artistry and old-world elegance that only marble tiles can effectively bring to homes and buildings.
Marble Serves As An Elegant Decorative Piece
The reputation of marble tile have stayed strong for centuries. One of the aspects in which marble is known is its role in the creation of exquisite fine art. Generally it is treasured for its refined, classical, decorative look.
Marble is also known for its versatility in the production of artifacts ranging from monuments to sculptures, wall tiles to floor tiles. However because of the connections most people have with this stone type, no matter what application most of us have in mind, the result is definitely going to be viewed as a major artistic statement, and one that is meant to last for years. A marble tile floor will remain as a monument to itself, as well as to good taste, with which it is also associated.
At present, these types of tiles are finding more and more and more applications, and usually range from utilizing marble tiles in bathrooms, to using marble tiles in the hallways and lobbies of commercial buildings. One may say that marble, which was the fixture of choice in the Middle ages, is itself enjoying a renaissance of its own today.

Marble Has A Unique Aesthetic Quality Not Seen In Other Stones
Marble tiles today possess a decorative natural stone flooring solution that cannot be matched aesthetically. Marble has generally been sought after by artists, artisans, and architects, and is firmly rooted in the history of architecture, art, and of the development of Eastern and Western civilizations.
These stones were used to fashion memorable and literally monumental pieces of artwork. As such, marble stands as a material with built-in associations of craft, artistry, and longevity, making it a preferred material for use in any interior. With marble tiles, a unique aesthetic quality is gained, along with a reputation for the rich historical legacy with which this stone is associated with.
Hypoallergenic Choice For Flooring
Many view the use of marble as a hypoallergenic choice for flooring, because it has a dense surface upon which antigens, and particles which cause allergic symptoms become inflamed, and are less able to reside than they would in carpets. Before, the use of marble as flooring surfaces for hospitals was common, until the use of porcelain tiles grew to its current level of popularity.
In the summer season, the cool surface of these tiles can be quite a pleasant underfoot, adding a unique comfort value to the choice of flooring. Most flooring experts see marble floor tiles as a great way to accent an interior, with the added benefits of its more practical features. |

There are many different choices for swimming pool paving. Some are very inexpensive, such as concrete. Others are quite costly, such as natural stone set in mortar. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. However, travertine pavers have many attributes, particularly around a pool.
Here are the advantages and reasons they should be strongly considered.
1. Travertine pavers are cool to the touch. This means that when you walk barefoot they will not be hot on your feet. Many of the other paving materials do get hot, such as pavers and bluestone.
2. They come in very pretty colors. I work with the Andes Collection. Manchester is a beautiful, caramel color. If your home is brick with tan grout, the color will go well together. There are also two shades of gray available.
3. Travertine pavers come in different sizes and are completely square. They can be laid the same way that pavers are laid which is dry laid. There is no need to set them in concrete, except for the pool coping.
4. They are a natural stone. What could be nicer?

5. The pool copings come in two different widths. The 6" width is a good choice if the pool has many curves, as there will be fewer cuts. The 12" coping is wide and has a nice look. This one can be easily used for more geometric shaped pools. It can be used for curvilinear swimming pools, but there will be more cutting of the pieces, and there for it will be more time consuming for the contractor. By the way, not all of the colors have matching bullnose.
6. There are a variety of sizes and patio designs to choose from. London is a large pattern and nice for expansive areas. The largest size is 16"x24" and the smallest is 8"x8". Large pieces of travertine are beautiful.
7. Matching tile is available in a multitude of sizes. This is very practical if the pool area has retaining walls or outdoor kitchens, as they can be faced with this for and interesting look. The material and colors can be the same, and yet different sizes can provide interest.
8. The cost is not the most expensive. The cost fall between dry laid brick and dry laid bluestone. It is closer in cost to bluestone. I will admit that pavers are less expensive.
9. It's a newer material and provides for a different kind of look.
10. It will not fade. |

Marble is like a sponge and absorbs grime from smoke, dust, and furniture polish. This cleaning method uses ordinary, acid-free household products.
Steps
- Remove all metal fittings from the object to be cleaned.
- Get a plastic or glass container large enough to hold the object.
- Put the object in the container and add half a standard scoop of laundry powder. Add more if the object is large.
- Cover the object with warm water and stir the detergent into the water.
- Allow it to soak for several days. Stir every now and then.
- You can place the container in a microwave oven and heat it slowly until short of boiling. This will speed up the process.
- Soak the object in in clean water for a day or more, after it is clean. Be sure to change the water at least once.
- Dry and refit any metal parts, as needed.
Tips
- Note that this is most useful for removing dust, smoke grime, furniture polish, and the like. This process will not remove rust marks.
Warnings
- Don't put cold marble into hot water or vice versa, as it may crack.
- Never use acid on marble as it will dissolves the surface, removing any polish and eventually pitting it. This includes vinegar, citric acid, muriatic acid, spirits of salt, battery acid and most toilet cleaners.
- Highly coloured material may stain the marble.
Things You'll Need:Plastic or glass container ;Laundry detergent ;water ;Microwave oven (optional)

It is very easy to take proper care of a stone floor. Whether your floor is marble, slate, granite, limestone or terrazzo, following a basic cleaning routine is important. A stone floor adds elegance and beauty to any home, and will continue to do so for many years with the right care.
Things You'll Need: Dust mop ;Wet mop
Steps
1Step One
Dust mop your stone floor on a regular basis, every day if possible. Some floors may need to be dust mopped more often, depending upon how heavy the traffic is on the floor.
2Step Two
Wash your stone floor with a wet string mop and a stone soap solution as often as necessary. You can also clean your floors with just water.
3Step Three
Re-polish your stone floors once every two to three years, or have them re-polished professionally. When you notice the shine on your floor is beginning to fade, you need to re-polish your floors.
4Step Four
Preserve your stone floors by wiping up any spills immediately.
5Step Five
Repair any deep scratches in your stone floors, or have them repaired professionally, as soon as you notice them.
Tips & Warnings
- If you do not have to a stone soap, use a solution of neutral soap.
- It's best to have a separate dust mop and wet mop for your stone floors that are not used in other areas of the house.
- The best thing you can do for your stone floors is keep them free of gritty dirt that can scratch and mar them.
- Never use vinegar, chemical cleaners, detergents or wax on your stone floors.
- If the shine on your stone floor fades, the only way to restore it is to have the stone re-ground.

Today slate tile flooring is becoming ever more popular for providing a beautiful finishing touch to any refurbished room in the house especially the bathroom, kitchen and basement or even in an area outdoors.
This is because this beautiful natural stone is not only waterproof, making it the ideal choice for areas where moisture or water may be present, but it is also very durable. Because of its durability it does not require much in the way of maintenance and due to the dark color of the stone it can hide dirt very well.
So is slate tile flooring really the right choice for your home? Below we will take a look at some of the things you will need to consider if you are thinking of having slate flooring installed in your home.
1. When considering slate tile flooring it is important that you consider the location where you are looking to have it installed. If you are placing it in an area where there is going to be a lot of foot traffic or if it is going to be outside then you need to choose accordingly.

2. It is also important to remember that slate flooring is by nature not as uniformly colored like certain ceramic tiles or hardwood and laminate flooring will be. However these variations in color can actually be used to your advantage when installing the flooring as it will provide you with a possible pattern for the room in question.
3. Before you actually install the slate tile flooring lay it out in a dry run and this will provide you with a chance to test color patterns as well as any thickness variations that may occur between each slate tile. Also you can check out the overall spacing of your slate tile flooring to ensure that it fits into the floor space that you are covering.
By keeping these points in mind when considering slate tile flooring for your home, you should be able to find something that really adds to the design of the room where you want to install it. Not only is it strong and durable and able to resist water, it is also easy to care for because any accidental spills just need to be wiped up using either a cloth or mop.
On the other hand, be aware that there are some downsides to having slate tile flooring in your home. The main one is that it feels cold to walk on if you are barefoot. Also, if it has become highly polished it can be very slippery. This type of tile flooring is also not really the sort of thing you should install in an apartment as it does not absorb sound very well. |

Coming second only to China, Iran is a world major producer of construction stones. Therefore, even small investment in the industry could yield high value added revenues, an official with the Industries and Mines Organization of Lorestan Province noted.
Referring to the rich deposits of construction stones at the mines across this western province of Iran, the official said that the mineral accounted for around 90 percent of the region's reserves.
Unfortunately, due research have not been carried out on the issue therefore, relating bodies have decided to conduct a thorough geological and exploratory studies on the region's construction stones mines, he stated.
Currently, some 2.5 million tons of raw stones is produced from the mines in Lorestan Province some of which are exported, he announced adding that around 400 stone cutting and processing plants are operating in the region.

A granite floor is a great option in comparison to other types of flooring such as marble, wood, linoleum or various other tiles. Granite is generally used in landscaping and for entrance, floor and other outdoor living areas. But a granite floor is also an excellent option for a kitchen, bathroom or other areas where homeowners are seeking alternatives to carpeted flooring. A granite floor is not only practical, but can be quite attractive when style, color and design are carefully selected.
Furthermore to the fact that it is long lasting and aesthetically pleasant, those who opt for a granite floor as opposed to the many other options out there can consider themselves environmentally friendly. Unlike other flooring materials, granite does not require destroying trees or use of other natural resources or harmful chemicals in processing.
This type of application can consist of either tiles or slab. The majority consider slabs to be more pleasing to the eye than tiles. Just like any other type of flooring, a granite floor can also get damaged with time. For instance, a granite floor in a heavily trafficked living area can eventually become worn during a course of time, and dulling may occur. Another disadvantage is that it can also come off. Proper care should be taken to keep away from putting items like containers holding acidic beverages or certain types of soaps and shampoos on the floor. In cases of deficiencies in a granite floor, this can be corrected by regular polishing. Polishing also helps with any water rings or spots that might mar its appearance.
Anyone who undertakes the cleaning of granite floors will be pleased to know that it??s a relatively easy job. Granite can either be vacuumed or dust mopped, and should also be wet mopped on a regular basis. One can use a neutral detergent when wet mopping. Granite can also be cleaned with a regular household window cleaner. Another advantage of granite is that it is much less porous than marble or other types of stone. But while less so than other types of stone, granite is porous and thus some colors can absorb moisture and appear discolored.
If you have little tots running around your home or a furry friend or two this might be a good choice for a floor. A granite floor will in general not crack from the damage of everyday use as might other types of flooring. If any damages, it is likely to occur during shipping or installation of the granite floor. On the whole, this is a perfect choice for someone seeking a flooring option that offers both natural beauty and minimal maintenance and repair work.

If you are looking for a premium kitchen countertop material you may at first think of granite or Corian. However there is another option you may want to consider which is quartz. Quartz surfaces are made from approx. 90% quartz and 10% epoxy resin with some styles looking a lot like natural stone. You may have seen quartz countertops referred to as Silestone but this is actually a brand name, some other brands available include HanStone, Okite, DuPont's Zodiaq and Formica's Crystallite
Color and Finish of Quartz
One of the benefits quartz has over other natural material is that there is a massive range of colors to choose from. Which means you can be as conservative or daring are you wish. When selecting your quartz kitchen countertop you will also need to look at the finishes available as there is the highly polished option or a textured stone effect.
The problem that often occurs with natural stone is the fact that they can vary in shade and pattern so much. This is not a problem with quartz so if you order your countertop from a sample you will be pleased to know that you won't have any nasty surprises when you countertop is delivered.
Durable
If you are going to spend a lot of money on your kitchen then you will want a material which will keep looking great for many years to come. One benefit quartz has over granite is that sealing is not required - this is ideal if you have a busy life-style. However it is recommended that you wipe up any spills to be on the safe side.
Prices of Quartz
The cost is calculated by linear foot and you can expect to pay around $110 to $250 per linear foot.
Other Notes
As of 2005, Silestone have included Microban on their quartz counters which prevents the growth of germs and bacteria. I am not aware any other manufacturer using Microban on their quartz but you may want to check this out.
If you are fed up of your kitchen then replacing your countertop can go a long way to giving you are totally new and luxurious appearance. This is why many people are choosing quartz work surfaces.
