First of all, unless you're a gadget lover who had the skinny on VOIP long before most people had even heard of it, it's probably a great idea for you to know what VOIP is! With all the acronyms flying around these days, sometimes it's hard to know just what a set of initials stands for. VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. VOIP often masquerades by other names as well, such as: IP Telephony, Internet telephony, and digital phone.
Now that you know what VOIP stands for, I'm sure you want to know what it is exactly. VOIP is the latest, hottest trend in telephone service. VOIP makes it possible to have voice conversations over the Internet through the use of Internet phones.
Now this ability to have conversations via your computer has many advantages. One is that it makes it easy for business people to stay connected and in touch. VOIP technology also has the advantage of giving people from around the globe an opportunity to talk directly for generally much less than long distance charges would be. The savings on telephone charges alone make VOIP highly attractive to many people.
While these are great advantages, there is a downside. Because of its newness, VOIP technology is not quite as good overall as ordinary telephone service. Many people who use Internet telephony complain about the reception they get. This technology is rapidly improving, though, and some VOIP providers already have pretty darn good equipment out there.
Too, unless your digital telephone is directly connected to a landline phone company, you will be at the mercy of power outages. There's also a problem with Internet providers going down and leaving you stranded without telephone service. So many experts recommend that you keep a landline or cell phone along with your Internet phone. This, of course, pushes up costs which makes VOIP telephones less desirable to many folks.
Another downside to VOIP technology that's very important to know about is that it is susceptible to identity theft. Because many VOIP service providers do not have secure lines-yet-your calls can be listened to by people you aren't aware are listening in.
It's a little like the old days when the telephone was first invented and mass produced. People called through what were call “party” lines that meant anyone could listen—and they did. We humans just can't resist eavesdropping. Today, though, this can also make it easy for those unscrupulous, well, thugs to rip off your personal and confidential information. So when choosing a VOIP service provider, you want to be sure you're getting the most secure line as possible.
And just like when the telephone was first invented, VOIP technology will take some time to perfect. But it is technology that's here to stay. As people get busier and are attempting to multi-task everything, being able to have a telephone conversation while you continue to work on your computer, all in one simple package, is just too good to resist. So the one thing you can count on is that in a year or two, VOIP telephones will be practically as common as cell phones—and probably with equipment and service plans available that are as good as cell phone manufacturers and service providers have now. |

Everywhere you turn these days, you are bombarded with some company claiming how superior their VoIP solution is for home use. You go into Best Buy and they are promoting one VoIP service, you go into Circuit City, they are promoting another one, then you get VoIP offers with your cable TV bill, your credit card statements, and even with your bank statement! How do you wade through all this marketing hype to find the truth about which VoIP service is best for you?
Although to the tech-savvy consumer it is obvious, it is not obvious to all as to one of the very first things you need to have a good VoIP phone service at home, and that is a solid and reliable high-speed Internet connection. The VoIP carriers don't even mention that but rather they assume that you already have that and that the high-speed Internet service you have is solid and reliable. There is your first problem, which may disqualify you from having anything more than total frustration if you try to switch to VoIP.
Using VoIP means that you are making and receiving telephone calls from your high-speed Internet connection. This cannot be done using a dial-up connection, which makes almost no sense at all anyway. If your best option for high-speed Internet is satellite, you should also hang up thoughts of using VoIP since satellite can barely accommodate high-speed data, let alone voice communications. If you currently have satellite for your high-speed connection, you already know what I mean, I don't even think about it for VoIP.
So let's say you don't use dial-up or satellite. Take a hard look at your high-speed Internet connection and evaluate it. Is it rock solid? Is it reliable? Keep in mind that this is going to be the core and foundation of your VoIP service, and if your high-speed connection is flaky or just barely marginal in terms of "high speed", your VoIP experience is going to be poor in best case. And this is not the fault of the VoIP provider you choose, since they have less than zero control over the quality of your Internet connection.
Beyond that, look at price and features. Don't pay a higher price because there are a load of features available that you will never use. The basic features of VoIP are unlimited calling within the continental US, voice mail, and call waiting. Do you really need more features than that? If so, you should take a long hard look at your requirements and determine how much extra you will be paying for those extra services, especially comparing against how often you will use them. More often than not, you will find that those additional services are not worth the extra that you will pay for them.
Like anything else, evaluate what you are spending your money on. Are you implementing VoIP to save money, or are you implementing technology for the sake of technology? When you consider that your traditional telephone line from the phone company is costing you about $25 per month just for dial tone, and that a good VoIP service can be obtained for under $17 per month for dial tone and all the long distance calls you care to make, your decision about VoIP starts to become quite clear. Try it, and you may discover that this is something you should have implemented a long time ago! |

Every business moves forward cutting its running costs. It is often the only way to be competitive on the market as rising the prices to reach the profitable margin may result in losing the considerable market share. Have you ever considered starting cutting your running costs from your communication expenses?
If you make a lot of local and long distance calls, it may be reasonable for you to search for the alternatives to your regular phone company. It may appear to you that you do overpay a lot. New technologies offered by VoIP and calling cards providers allow users to make calls locally and worldwide at significantly lower rates than those you pay to your usual provider.
Just imagine - if your phone calls bill equals, say, $2000 a month - that you may save up to 75%! It is no less than $1500. Don’t you have any ideas of how to invest this money properly? Therefore, isn’t it the hightime to consider switching to VoIP or calling cards?
Most of the businesses that offer long distance calling services based on VoIP technology offer various packages and complete solutions for small enterprises. They are able to provide you with thorough consulting services so that you will clearly see where and how your business will benefit from such a revolution in communicating. Further on, they will plan the process and make sure you have all the necessary hardware installed to say ‘bye’ to your regular phone services provider.
However, if your business is critically dependent of the ultimate reliability and quality, you want to combine both VoIP and regular telephony, as VoIP technology sometimes suffers from broadband glitches and may encounter certain blackouts which you may not afford experiencing.

Choosing the VoIP phone service provider is one of the most crucial tasks. Certain factors must be kept in mind while making the final decision.
1. Quality of service - A hassle free service would give you and your customers a sound sleep! So you must ensure that the quality of service is free of common problems like jitters. The best way to check the quality is to ask for a live test of the call. 2. Support service - One should look around for a provider giving 24×7 online support in order to ensure smooth working of daily operations and quick resolution of problems.
In this day and age of changing communication needs, switching over to VoIP services is definitely the most viable and profitable option.

Why are the overseas calling cards that consumers see at most on-line retailers not available at any other online location or in-store. This is because many of these on-line calling card merchants have created private label calling cards. Do you ever notice that when you call your local access number for a calling card, the automated message prompts “please enter your pin”, rather than saying something like “Please enter your Bita Calling Card pin”? This is because many of these private label calling cards are run off of the same calling card platforms. Investing in the infrastructure to create your own truly non-shared private label phone card is expensive. High speed T2 connections a VOIP gateway and a calling card platform are all required. To own all of this equipment would cost approximately $30,000. In order to avoid these costs, many online calling card retailers rent this equipment. Below is a picture of how typical prepaid calling card architecture looks.Private label phone cards make their money by charging a premium on the “carrier rates” that they pay for the call. Carrier rates are like wholesale per-minute rates to a certain destination. For example, if the shared calling card infrastructure allows the private label calling card company to select a calling route from continental USA to Pakistan for 2 cents a minute, this same company may advertise this calling card at 4 cents a minute and thus, make 2 cents a minute. But wait…. there’s more: remember those hidden fee’s I talked about in my last post? Well that’s the kicker, calling card companies make a lot of money on the hidden fees. Most calling card platforms allow the private-label card maker to put any number of hidden fee’s on the card. It is for this—unregulated–reason that Phone Card Depot clearly outlines all fee’s on each card. I haven’t talked much about brand name calling cards in this post, but we refer to these cards as calling cards created by companies that do not retail their own cards. For example, Group of Goldline manufactures many high quality calling cards, but a consumer cannot buy these cards directly from Goldline, you must buy the cards from a variety store or on-line retailer that sells their products. We think it is important for the retailer and manufacturer to remain separate. This is because a bias may develop to push private label cards over cards better suited to the user. A big problem with most private label calling cards is that the manufacturer is completely unknown to the user and that the cards are pre-paid. Imagine if this manufacturer went bankrupt or even worse: decided to shut down this particular calling card and create a new one. You may be stuck with a pre-paid calling card that no longer works. |

When looking for an international calling card you obviously want to get the most competitive and the cheapest rates possible - but sometimes this may not always be the best option. Why? Well its like anything that you purchase, cheap is sometimes good, but remember the age old saying "you get what you pay for" this can be said for international calling cards and phone card.
To give you an example, if you are calling the UK from the USA the rate you will expect to pay should be around then 3 to 5 cents region (depending on the service) however the lower end of that scale may use VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology which will not be as clear or as reliable. If you are paying something near 5 cent, generally this higher rate will be because a more dependable tier 1 carrier is being used so calls will not be dropped as often and the quality should be better.
If you see a rate lower than 3 cents to the UK, for example, I would be wary of hidden charges and rates - or they are using VOIP and the quality might not be that good.
So, in summary, lower rates are good - but when it comes to calling your family you might want to pay that bit extra to get a service that works, is clear and reliable! |

Prepaid phone cards or calling cards are telephone minutes purchased in advance. Each phone card lists a toll-free number and is imprinted with an access code or PIN number. The dialer will call the toll-free number and enter the access number before making the intended phone call. After the number is dialed, the prepaid countdown begins. Since calls are directed from the toll-free phone number listed on the phone card, the long distance provider of the phone in use is bypassed.
The majority of people who purchase prepaid phone cards do so because they want to lower their home phone bill or avoid collect calls or high cell phone charges. Most pre-paid phone cards come in increments of five, ten or twenty five dollars. This can buy anywhere from thirty minutes to ten hours depending on the company.
Pre-paid phone cards can be purchased almost anywhere. Post offices, supermarkets, electronic stores and discount marts are just a few of the places where pre-paid phone cards can be found for sale. Phone cards can also be purchased over the Internet or through mail order catalogs, television commercials and even the local newspaper. Be careful though; just because the minutes on phone cards are pre-paid doesn't mean they're a bargain. Shop around before purchasing to see which phone card gives you the most minutes for your money.
Just because you bought a ten dollar calling card doesn't mean you have ten dollars worth of minutes. Be aware of phone card surcharges and maintenance fees. As soon as your phone card is activated, it might be subjected to service fees, taxes and connection charges. If you use a pay phone, you can expect an additional surcharge. Always check the packaging on your phone card and make note of any fees and surcharges. You'll also want to check to make sure there's no expiration date. If there is, you'll have to use the phone card before that date or lose your money.
Calling cards are convenient for college students and those who do a lot of traveling. Thanks to phone cards, collect calls can now be a thing of the past. A call made with a phone card won't appear on your phone bill, so you can make discreet phone calls from your home or office without the number appearing on the bill. You'll also be able to avoid the high rates that come with making phone calls from a hotel room.
In most cases, you can't go wrong with prepaid phone cards. Having a couple in case of emergency is never a bad thing. |

You are often on the road traveling. As much as you want to stay home, you have no choice but to travel, for it is what your job requires. You cannot help but feel homesick every time you are away. After all, there are people back home who you often leave behind.
Despite the distance, you are very thankful that there are phone cards available for people like you who travel too much. Calling cards give you the chance to call your loved ones — even your dog. Of course, you also need to report back to your company on a daily basis and talk to your boss who sent you on this mission. He’ll want to hear a report as to how far along the business deal has gone and how soon you can come home. Or you might be calling someone in your hometown regarding some business that you may have left hanging, since you had to fly to some distant place.
There are companies and businesses out there that offer calling cards. There are different rates used by different company, as well as different terms and conditions. There are calling cards for local calls, for calls within the United States and for calls overseas. Some of these calling cards already have stored values making them prepaid, and there are also some phone cards that are paid on a monthly basis.
Using cheap calling cards give you the chance to save more. The fact is, if you compare the rates of calling from hotels or inns, you will discover that there is a huge difference in the rates from hotels and rates used by calling cards. The same goes for cellular phone charges. With financial resources difficult for everyone right now, so using a calling card is the way to go. |
