History of Aromatherapy Learn and discover how aromatherapy came to be including how ecah nation contributed to the history of the alternative medicine. Aromatherapy has been around for a very long time; it arguably began in Egypt, several thousand years ago, when the Egyptians used various plant oils for medicinal, fragrant, cosmetic, and spiritual uses. This marked the beginning of the story and history of aromatherapy. Many of the substances used to preserve body parts during the mummifying process are used for healing in aromatherapy today.
The Greeks had several aromatherapy-type remedies for illnesses as well. The most well-known of these was megaleion, which was a myrrh-based lotion used for its anti inflammatory effects and wound healing potential. The history of aromatherapy was not greatly developed during the time of the Romans; whilst the Romans did perfect a distilling technique, they preferred using it to develop floral waters rather than essential oils.
By the twelfth century in history, lavender was well-known as a healing agent, and was commonly distilled for medicinal purposes. In the fourteenth century, an interesting phenomenon was noted: perfumers seemed much less susceptible to the Black Death than those around them. What caused this? Could it be their constant contact with potent fragrances that helped them? This opened a whole new window of speculation about the preventative and healing powers of plants.
Perhaps the greatest advance of aromatherapy history came in the 1900's with the French chemist and scholar René Maurice Gattefossé, who is sometimes referred to as "the father of modern aromatherapy". When Gattefossé had the misfortune to burn his hand whilst working in a perfume plant, he thrust his hand into the nearest cooling liquid, which happened to be a bucket of lavender oil. He was amazed at how quickly the burn healed and how little scarring occurred. From then on, Gattefossé was devoted to researching essential oils. In fact, he was even the one who coined the term aromatherapie in 1928 for the title of one of his books!.
Aromatherapy history helped us hone in the properties of this selective alternative medicine and we continue to develop further even today; with modern equipment, distilling is even easier and quicker than ever, our knowledge of this branch of healing continues to grow. Whilst some scientists are skeptical as to the actual healing merits of aromatherapy, many people have experienced recoveries as a result of this interesting science, and its following continues to grow.

Yoga From The Inside Out - New Perspectives In A Personal Practice Are you feeling stuck in your yoga practice? Or you've just started out but find it frustrating? Here I describe how I found - and moved through - the limits of my own flexibility, and rediscovered my own body in the process. I was reading through an article in a yoga magazine today, and it sparked some 'ah-ha's' on some yoga issues I have been wrestling with. And in my practice today, not only did I rediscover the way my hips should be aligned, but I reconnected with a sense of body strength and balance that I though I had lost.
As a bit of background, I used to do yoga very regularly - 2 classes a day, sometimes more (though I was never able to overcome my body's late-night, late-morning programming to make it to very early classes!). I was very fit, very flexible, and extremely dedicated. I would work on asanas at home, and many of my friends were equally dedicated. Then, I gradually moved away from both those friends, and that yoga-centered lifestyle.
When I took up yoga again, it was very much as a beginner. I had lost that core strength I once had, my flexibility had gone AWOL (absent-without-leave, to coin a military term!), and I could not do many of the poses I once did rather effortlessly. And yet, I still remembered that I could do them! It has been intensely frustrating, to say the least. I found myself really trying to do the 'finished' pose, even though I realize now that the plane that my body was in, was way out of alignment.
But the turning point for me began, in a way, by abandoning any set sequence that I had learned. I used to be heavily into ashtanga yoga, and that has a very strict sequence of poses. You start with a 'warm-up' pose, like suryanamaskara (the Sun Salutation), and then move into the standing poses such as padangusthasana (Foot to Fingers Forward Bend), pada hastasana (another standing forward bend), trikonasana (Extended Triangle Pose), and others.
My problem centered around the fact that between 'then' (when I was flexible), and 'now', I had broken my ankle in 3 places, had surgery on it, and managed to twist my hip when I broke the ankle. Despite it being 3 years since recovering from that injury, parts of my foot were just not very strong, and I had difficulty balancing as a result. As well as being stiff, those parts of my body just felt almost numb. Not the kind of numb where there is nerve damage. But the kind of numb that is a result of energy (and blood), not flowing freely. If you've ever 'rediscovered' parts of your body by doing any type of exercise that involved consciously connecting with the parts of your body being used, you'll know what I mean.
That sense of reconnection is very powerful. And given the way we often go about things, somewhat distracted, perhaps worrying or simply thinking all the time - about the past, the future, the groceries... it doesn't take an injury to actually feel disconnected from your body. Because yoga is about using consciousness and breath within movement, it is a beautiful way to literally 'rediscover' yourself.
I found though, that to start to move back into that strength that I knew I once had, I had to start where I was. This meant choosing certain poses to start to build some strength and flexibility, that were not in a sequence set in stone. I had an advantage in that I had done yoga a lot, and so had a range of experience to draw on. But for anyone just starting out, finding a good beginners class, with an understanding teacher, is a great place to begin. From there, perhaps talk to the teacher, who may be able to advise on what to concentrate. Or book in some private lessons to get a personalized program you can work on at home.
Working on yoga at home is important, even if you only do it for 15 minutes or half an hour a day. Because I felt exhausted, I left the standing poses alone. I made sure to warm up, using some generalized Oki yoga poses I knew, and then concentrated on opening my hips and building some abdominal and core strength. And I did it all lying on my futon bed! That way I couldn't put off doing something by thinking 'later, when I get up!'.
One thing that I found was critical in making reasonable progress, was what I think of as doing yoga from the inside out. You'll know if you've done yoga for a while, that once you 'get' a pose, there is a real effortlessness. It's like there is this conduit of energy that just lifts you up, elongates you, no matter how awkward it may seem from the outside. And yet, the way we often approach yoga, when we're not 'there' is like going to the gym. Or like I mentioned before - we try and assume the 'perfect' pose. But because we haven't 'unlocked' out stiff bodies, or become strong yet (or both), we just miss it completely.
Once I had stopped trying to fit my body into an ideal of an asana I held in my mind, and did the best I could without sacrificing any alignment, even if my legs were way in the air when they should be flat on the floor, or my hands were on my thigh instead of on my ankle, things started to flow. But the real key, was where I placed my awareness. I noticed where it was tight, just picked the 'biggest' tightness, and sat my consciousness smack bang in the middle. Then I very gently breathed out, through that tightness, and felt the sense of radiating energy arcing through it, from the inside out. Instead of pushing my limbs, I pushed my consciousness. Sometimes I didn't move at all, just held that pose. Sometimes I felt this wonderful release, that heralded a new layer to explore. But these ah-ha moments, these explorations, this reconnection, has allowed a very rapid healing of long standing areas of misalignment in my body.
And the wonderful thing about ah-ha moments, is how they often generate more, until a new approach to one's own practice becomes blazingly clear.

Alternative Cancer Treatment Being diagnosed with any type of cancer whether it is breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer or colon cancer among other is not pleasant, but most people cringe at the thought of having to undergo traditional cancer treatments like radiology and chemotherapy. But there are other solutions in the form of alternative cancer treatment.
There has been much dispute and debate over which treatment works the best, but it is thought that combining the more severe traditional treatments with an alternative cancer treatment. This can obviously depending on the severity of the cancer, the type of cancer and on other influencing factors. It is advised that before undergoing any alternative cancer treatment, that a medical practitioner is consulted.
Some cancer treatments that are considered alternative could also just be vitamin and mineral supplements to help boost the effectiveness of the traditional treatments. Other types of an alternative cancer treatment can include massages, acupuncture, aromatherapy, and meditation.
There are many natural methods that people are beginning to use as an effective alternative cancer treatment in fighting cancer. Some of these include a substance called laetrile which is found in some fruits. Many of these have not been proven and clinically tested but people do find relief from some of their cancer symptoms and even from the after effects of radiology and chemotherapy.
Another alternative cancer treatment is the recent discovery of the positive effects of shark cartilage and also hyperbaric oxygen therapy which is using high pressure oxygen which is found in atmosphere’s higher than sea level.
If a certain alternative cancer treatment is not proven, in order to access the side effects and how well it works, you might be asked to volunteer in one of the many clinical trials that are taking place. This can be a difficult decision as you might feel worse, but could also feel great. However the decision is ultimately up to you. Of course, you will need to consult with your medical practitioner first.
With so many options nowadays, you do not have to feel distraught about the ordeal you have to face if you are diagnosed with cancer. Be sure to research all your options thoroughly and choose an alternative cancer treatment that is best suited to you and the type of cancer you have. One of them is sure to provide at least a bit of relief physically and knowing that you have explored every option.

Karma Yoga - An Introduction Karma Yoga, or the "discipline of action" is based on the teachings of the Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad-Gita, the holiest of Hindu scriptures. Karma Yoga, or the "discipline of action" is based on the teachings of the Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad-Gita, the holiest of Hindu scriptures. As one of the four pillars of yoga, Karma yoga requires the adherence to one’s duty (swadarma) while remaining detached from the reward. Simply, It is the yoga of performance of "right action".
What is right action?
You might glance over the Sermon the Mount, as Jesus was very specific on what He considered ‘right action’. He mentions not to kill, or even speak badly about another. He mentions about sexual fidelity, and even not to think about it (as having the same result as committing it).
He says what is correct for marriage, for the saying of oaths, for not seeking revenge, for what do to do please God, and how to pray correctly. He says how to fast, how to think, not to worry (about the material life), not to judge others, and how to remain steadfast. All of these are principles of Karma Yoga.
So how can I practice Karma Yoga in my daily life?
Nothing could be easier. You do your swadarma (your rightful duty) daily, without regard to the rewards it will bring; just to do your best each day. You keep your mind, as much as you can, on God, and you will be practicing Karma Yoga. You can apply the simple but eternal truths as found in the Sermon.
And If You Do?
Without having the fruit of your action in mind, you can be sure that the poor in spirit will inherit the kingdom of heaven. That those who mourn will be comforted. That those who are meek will certainly inherit the earth.
You can be confident that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled.
That the merciful will obtain themselves mercy. That the pure of heart will see God, The peacemakers will be called the sons of God. Finally for all who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake will obtain the Kingdom of Heaven.
This is Karma Yoga expressed in a Western way, but any Yoga recognizes them, and He who said them. Practiced daily, you are yourself then a Karma Yogi.
