Can Babies Use Aromatherapy?
It has been a known fact for many years that aromatherapy can be used for the treatment of illnesses such as emotional as well as physical challenges. Today you can still find people that do not believe in the use of aromatherapy but they are diminishing in numbers. People today are well educated and know that the usage of aromatherapy products can have even extreme effect when used for treatment purposes. Normally we find that aromatherapy is used when treating adults but as with most other treatments it can be used for children and babies as well. The great thing about aromatherapy is that it is a healthy way of treatment compared to the chemical treatments offered by the medicine industry.

As well as with all other treatment types used for adults, you need to keep in mind that at child is not as big a human as an adult and therefore you will need to correct to dose used. You wouldn’t not want to give your child an overdose even with the usage of the aromatherapy oils that are normally safe to use. Secondly it is always advised when using "adult products" and "adult treatments" on babies, that you consult with a professional aroma therapist to avoid causing any harm.

The good thing about the use of aromatherapy for babies is that you can treat them safely and will not have to pump medicine into their tiny bodies to relief them of illness symptoms. You will be doing your child a huge favor as it has been proven many times that extensive use of medicine can cause other diseases later in life.

Will Any Type of Aromatherapy Work?
When you first start out buying aromatherapy oils and essential oils with various scents, there are a few basic things that you will need to be aware of and to pay attention to. First of all it is crucially important that you go for the essential natural oils and not the (much cheaper) synthetic oils. Unfortunately most people have not done their homework and might think that as long as it is called aromatherapy oil, it must all be the same. Fact is that is very far from the truth.

The difference between using natural essential aromatherapy oils and synthetic ones are that the natural one is plant based. It is made from extracts from herbs and plants while the synthetic ones (as the name clearly states) are man or machine made and often comes from different types of chemicals that are mixed together.

Some synthetic oils have been the cause of skin irritations and some have actually been banned from the market. Not that you are in a situation where you are thinking of using oils to treat your child or even your baby, is would an absolute catastrophe if you by doing so caused skin irritations because you wanted to save those extra few dollars. I you think of it in another way you should ask yourself the question: "What is my child’s health worth to me?" Will I risk it to save a few dollars? Hopefully your answer to that question is NO.

To find essential oils you need to start with the list of ingredients. Does the list look like it is made up of natural ingredients such as herbs or does it seem synthetic? Secondly the way the oils are packed will often tell you whether it is quality or not. Lousy packing is often the same as lousy quality. Finally the price will often give away the natural essential oils. It will be sold at a far higher price than the synthetic ones but there is also no comparability in effects at all.

When you have found what you are looking for there is only the choice of scent and the desired effect. I suggest that you talk to the person selling you the oils and tell them that it is for your baby and that the symptoms you want it to work for is so and so. That will provide you with the best possible start to use aromatherapy as a way of treatment.

The Truth about Acupuncture as an Alternative Medicine
The Truth about Acupuncture as an Alternative Medicine
A quick look out of many office windows reveals a world of fast-moving cars, bustling people, and a steady stream of chaos. There are people dashing to and fro, up in the morning to rush off to work, and then rushing home in the evening. The stresses from everyday life begin to pile up. Before long fatigue sets in, muscles ache, and a general sense of malaise occurs. The body's immune system begins to suffer from the lack of rest and the build-up of stress.

The immune system takes a hit when we start to feel stressed and overloaded. Colds and sicknesses can set in easily, reducing production at work. Many people can't afford time off to rest and recuperate, but over-the-counter and prescription medications have many side effects that leave individuals feeling drowsy and slow. There is an alternative to taking pills that has minimal side effects (and mostly none at all) that can leave people feeling better than they did before, with energy flowing and the ability to face the world.

Wouldn't it be good to feel better, have more energy, get rid of those muscle aches and pains, and even have migraines ease up or go away completely? Is it worth a shot? What if this alternative came with very little risk of side effect? It sounds pretty appealing, and it might be surprising to learn that this procedure is acupuncture.

Acupuncture might seem like the current rage in alternative medicine, but it has been around for thousands of years. Acupuncture's roots can be traced back to the Taoist tradition. Practitioners of acupuncture, before it was called so, would meditate on how man and the world's energy merged with each other. The flow of nature was within the human body and governed by a life force or energy called Qi (pronounced chee). Within the body, as in nature, there were lines that energy ran down. These lines are called meridians, and there are fourteen meridians within the human body. From these fourteen meridians, there are thousands of points that allow the blocked energy (from bodily injury, stress, or a poorly cared-for self) to be corrected.

Quick fact: The traditional Chinese explanation of the effectiveness of acupuncture is based on the Taoist philosophy according to which good health depends on a free circulation of chi or life-force energy throughout all the organs of the body

The acupuncturist, after an initial physical and questioning the patient about his or her past medical history, will locate the damaged or blocked area and begin work. Thin, solid needles are inserted into the skin. It is virtually painless. The needles are then manipulated by the hand or electrical stimulation. The acupuncturist then leaves the patient to rest and relax before coming back in to remove the needles.

Acupuncture isn't a miracle cure and more than one visit is usually required to see large improvement on how we feel. However, it's a good alternative to prescription medication that can leave individuals feeling fuzzy or zombie-like. In fact, more and more insurance plans are covering the costs of acupuncture, realizing that the alternative medicine has great value in helping people. There are little side effects and risks, and it's certainly worth a try as opposed to filling oneself up with medication and drugs.

Jewelry Used for Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy jewelry comes in many forms, shapes and sizes including necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets. Most common are the necklaces that include a locket or other pendant which contains a small pad or reservoir that may be used to hold the scent. Wearing a locket or vial with your favorite scent is a good way of promoting good health, and can help lift your mood all day. It is a fun and very easy way to enjoy aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy uses the concentrated scented oils of plants to enhance the human state of mind or mood, and to encourage health and healing. Lavender, as an example, may be used to relax a person and promote sleep, while the scent of cinnamon is used as a motivator. Some scents, like white jasmine, are thought to draw love from the universe. Candles, bath products, incense and body oils and lotions are common methods used for aromatherapy. A less common but equally effective method of deploying aromas is to wear jewelry that has reservoirs that may be used to hold your favorite scents and keep them with you all the time.

Aromatherapy jewelry comes in many forms, shapes and sizes including necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets. Most common are the necklaces that include a locket or other pendant which contains a small pad or reservoir that may be used to hold the scent. Put a drop of scented oil on the pad, or fill the reservoir with your favorite spice and wear it around your neck to keep your scent with you around the clock. Lockets are not the only way to go either, some companies offer small vials, cords, or pendent's that can do the same thing. Aromatherapy jewelry lockets come in many shapes and sizes. The traditional shapes like hearts, the sun, the Celtic cross, the pentacle, roses, and various animals including dragons are the most common. Vials too come with many different shapes and sizes. Most have engraved patterns to add decor. The costs of these lockets or vials range anywhere from $20 to $75 dollars, depending on your personal tastes.

Finding Aromatherapy Jewelry

Aromatherapy jewelry is not quite as common as candles and scented oils are. Not many stores stock these products so your best bet is to find a store with a New Age slant. These types of stores will often stock aromatherapy jewelry. Another option is to find privately owned store that carries aromatherapy products or to attend Renaissance type festivals where these types of products are often showcased. shopping online is also an option. EBay, as an example does often have aromatherapy products listed for sale. Wearing a locket or vial with your favorite scent is a good way of promoting good health, and can help lift your mood all day. It is a fun and very easy way to enjoy aromatherapy.

Practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

Practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga
Find out what the eight limbs of yoga have to do with ashtanga vinyasa yoga. We also discuss ashtanga's distinctive form of breathing, and provide an overview of the practice itself.
The term Ashtanga historically refers to the 'eight limbs' of yoga, a system derived from the writings of the mystic Patanjali. The yoga known in the West as Ashtanga, however, refers to something else - and that is the active, flowing style of yoga popularized by Pattabhi Jois. Jois' yoga is often referred to as astanga vinyasa yoga now to differentiate it from this historical term.

All styles of yoga have been influenced by Patanjali's works. The principles he describes underpin the philosophies of the various branches, and in this, ashtanga vinyasa yoga is no different. These eight limbs are described as: abstinences (Yama), observances (Niyama), postures (Asana), breath control (Pranayama), sense withdrawal (Pratyahara), concentration (Dharana), meditation (Dhyana), and contemplation (Samadhi).

Breathing correctly is an important part of practicing yoga, and Vinyasa refers to movement that is synchronized with the breath. Astanga vinyasa yoga uses a particular style of breathing called ujjayi pranayama. This is a somewhat noisy type of breathing that is done by keeping the mouth closed, and slightly constricting the throat. Its' effect is to reduce the amount of air passing though, which thereby increases its' force and speed.

A lot of heat is generated in the body when breathing ujjayi style. It also helps keep the mind focused on the asanas themselves, and is thus a good way to train the mind. It is said that the asanas, in combination with the heat generated, help eliminate toxins from the body. The practice, of breath and asana, is considered a way to purify our internal organs and muscles.

The Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system uses three main sequences, each of which performs a different function and builds on the previous in terms of skill, strength, and flexibility required.

The primary sequence is known as Yoga Chikitsa, and this is the sequence that helps to align the body and expel toxins. The next sequence is known as Nadi Shodhana, and this is the intermediate sequence that is said to open the energy channels and purify the nervous system. The advanced sequence is called Sthira Bhaga, and is a higher level series that requires a greater degree of flexibility.

It is important for those practicing this form of yoga to ensure that they fully develop each sequence or series before they move on to the next. The series do increase in levels of difficulty, and for most people, the first, or primary series is all they may feel inclined to do. Many of the poses within it are challenging enough, particularly if you do not have a lot of upper body strength. And even without progressing beyond this series, the benefits of increased co-ordination, physical fitness, and concentration, can be developed.

Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is an extremely enjoyable, dynamic style that provides both physical and mental challenges. It is ideal for those that want a strong practice which incorporates the cardiovascular benefits of regular fitness with the flexibility and inner strength that is characteristic of yoga.

Yoga Styles: Guide to the Most Popular Types
Here, read a basic guide to yoga styles that will help you find the best yoga practice to suit your interest and physical condition.
The image of yoga has changed during the past years. If once, the first picture that popped your mind was of a group of white wearing weirdoes standing on their heads and breathing loudly, now you are probably thinking about Madonna's well shaped arms. Currently, yoga is one of the most popular fitness activities worldwide. One of its appeal is that it can be practiced by elders and it can improve the overall physical fitness of athletes.

If you want to start practicing yoga, here is a quick guide to the basic types of yoga. While most of them are based on the same ancient postures, each yoga style has a different focus. Some of the yoga styles focus on strengthening the body while others focus on flexibility. Other types of yoga focus mainly on breathing, relaxation, and meditation.

Most of the yoga styles that were adopted in the west, were derived from the Hatha Yoga, which is a general term that refers to the physical branches of the ancient Indian philosophy. The purpose of the traditional Hatha Yoga was to achieve balance between mind and body through moral discipline and physical exercises, which are expressed by a series of asana: postures, panorama: breathing and meditation.

Western culture adopted mainly the physical aspects of the Hatha Yoga and ignored the moral aspects, usually even the breathing and meditations aspects. All the yoga styles that were derived from the Hatha Yoga share the same basic principle that mental balance can be achieved through practice of physical exercises and postures. Each yoga style chooses to focus on different aspect.

Ashtanga Yoga:
This focuses on the flow of postures in order to improve strength, stamina and flexibility of the body. During a Asthanga Yoga class, the participants jump from one posture to another. Therefore, this type of yoga is not the ideal for beginners. People who are not well fit may find it too difficult and demanding. However, if you are interested in improving your strength, flexibility and stamina and you are fit enough to deal with an hour of jumping from one posture to another, Asthanga Yoga can suit you.

Power Yoga:
This is an American development of the Asthanga Yoga that also adopted several elements from other types of yoga styles. You can find Power Yoga classes mainly in fitness and health clubs. Power Yoga focuses on strengthening the body by performing Hatha Yoga postures for a longer time to improve both physical flexibility and mental focus. Power Yoga can be a good exercise for athletes, people who practice types of fitness activities and people who want to tone their body.

Bikram Yoga:
A Bikram Yoga class features a series of 26 Hatha Yoga postures practiced in a heated room. It is also known as Hot Yoga. The purpose of the heat is to allow the participants to get into each of the yoga poses in a deeper and safer manner. The heat also helps clean the body from toxins promoting sweating. Bikram Yoga focuses more on the workout of the entire body, including the internal organs and less on flexibility. Bikram Yoga is not recommended to pregnant women and people who suffer from high blood pressure and heart conditions, but it can improve the physical fitness of people who recover from injuries.

Iyengar Yoga:
This focuses on the physical alignment of the body and the accurate performance of each posture. Some of the Iyengar Yoga postures are practiced with the assistance of props such as blocks and belts that are designed to help the participants achieve the most accurate posture and to protect their bodies from injuries. Since the flows between postures are not practiced, Iyengar Yoga classes are less intense and therefore more suitable for people who are less fit. Iyengar Yoga improves body strength and flexibility and can fit people of any age and every physical condition.

Jack Reider has been practicing Iyengar Yoga for over six years and he highly recommends it to everyone. You can find more of his articles at the guide to online casinos at http://www.gambling-portal.com that features updated information on yoga and other self relaxation methods.

Aromatherapy Cellulite Remedies

Aromatherapy Cellulite Remedies
Learn which 3 essential oils should be used in an aromatherapy cellulite remedy. Find out why certain carrier oils are recommended in this instance, and which two massage approaches can be used.
Aromatherapy oils have many therapeutic benefits that extend beyond them improving mood by simply smelling nice! It is these benefits that can be combined with self-massage to improve the appearance of cellulite. Whilst even the most expensive store-bought creams and treatments won't eliminate cellulite permanently, the appearance of cellulite can be improved with regular treatments, and this extends to in-home remedies. This article will discuss why self-massage can help, and what aromatherapy oils and carrier bases lend themselves to this home spa experience. With a little daily persistence, these nurturing remedies can save you some money too!

There are three essential oils that are particularly recommended for cellulite treatment. These are juniper, lavender, and rosemary. Juniper and rosemary are both diuretic oils that stimulate the flow of blood and lymph, improve circulation, and reduce puffiness, swelling, and water retention. These qualities are important in relation to cellulite when you consider that it is the result of fluid accumulation in the fatty layer of the skin. This happens when there are problems in the microcirculation, and its' believed to be associated with our hormones - especially estrogen.

Lavender is a beautifully scented oil that is relaxing and great for stress. But it also has benefits for the skin. It is toning, and has a revitalizing effect. When these oils are combined with a therapeutic carrier oil, they can be massaged into the skin for a good alternative cellulite remedy.

Carrier oils are important when using aromatherapy. Not only do they have a nourishing effect on their own, but some oils can be irritating when applied directly to the skin. This is especially true of sensitive skin types. Another point to consider is that the essential oils are usually quite thin compared to regular oil, and more expensive when you compare volume. The carrier oil allows the essential oil to be massaged, rather than being absorbed too quickly. And massage is integral to using aromatherapy effectively when it comes to cellulite.

Massage is well known in helping with circulation. Certain types of massage are specialized in improving the flow of lymph. Called lymphatic drainage, this massage is characterized by very soft strokes that go in certain directions associated with the body's circulatory system. In contrast, some types of cellulite treatments that mimic massage in different ways - by incorporating suction cups and other tools - draw on the tradition of deep tissue massage. The upshot of all this is that people wanting to try this form of home massage have a choice in what type of strokes and pressure they will use.

There are a number of different carrier oils that can be used. These include rosehip, jojoba, grape seed, and avocado oil. Some of these oils are generally used in smaller amounts, so a mixture is actually good.

* Avocado - this oil penetrates deeply, thus it will carry the essential oils more deeply into the skin, increasing their effectiveness. It also has a softening effect, and tends to be mixed with other carrier oils.
* Grape seed oil has a mild astringent effect, which is good for toning the skin. Also quite nourishing, grape seed has linoleic acid in it, an essential fatty acid. Essential fatty acids are important for healthy cell membranes. Grape seed oil can be used in larger quantities, and is often used as a base with other carrier oils mixed in.
* Rosehip also contains essential fatty acids, this time GLA. Whilst generally used as an anti aging oil on the face, it is a good source of vitamin C which is important in skin health.
* Jojoba - though actually a liquid wax, jojoba is similar in structure to the oils in our skin, and has antioxidant properties. It is more expensive and is absorbed quickly, making it best in mixture of carrier oils when used in an anti-cellulite massage.

Aromatherapy cellulite remedies can be a lovely experience, providing benefits on many levels. As well as improving circulation and skin tone, with the use of massage they can help women improve the appearance of cellulite. Their scent can also make this a pampering and destressing daily experience.

Reiki Energy Healing Therapy

Reiki Energy Healing Therapy
What is Reiki all about? Want to know more about Reiki Healing? Read on to find out…
Reiki Energy Healing Therapy
The word Reiki is actually a combination of two words ‘Rei’ and ‘Ki’. ‘Rei’ is the healing energy of the Universe and ‘Ki’ is the energy within. Thus Reiki means the transformation of the healing energy of the universe into the energy within.

Reiki energy healing therapy is often carried out via a process of channeling this energy through the laying of hands. This means, that a Reiki therapist will often cause the energy force of the universe to be transmitted into the recipient’s body via his hands. There are also several higher methods of Reiki healing which can provide energy healing long distance and via their eyes.

All of the matter in the universe is made up energy. This energy surrounds every living as well as non-living thing in the world. Similarly, the earth itself is a unique powerhouse of energy. This energy source is held to be inexhaustible and abundant of positive healing forces.

Within us human beings, there are said to be seven centers or Chakras of energy. Each Chakra controls and manages the functions of different aspects of our life on several levels. The Chakras (from top to the bottom) are said to be at the Crown or the Head, the Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Upper Stomach, Lower Belly and Sacral regions of our body. The flow or blockage of the flow of the energy between these Chakras and the Universe is supposed to cause a general balance or imbalance of forces within us.

With Reiki, the energy healing is carried out by channeling this unique energy force via the Crown Chakra, Heart Chakra and then the hand of the Reiki Healer to the recipient of the healing touch. This healing with energy has been said to cure many ailments – either physical or mental or spiritual.

The credit of creating or discovering this unique method of healing with energy goes to a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui. He said that this method of energy healing therapy came to him after several days of meditation, prayer and fasting.

Reiki is taught by ‘Masters’ across the world. In most cases, it is generally held to be important to see the lineage of learning – that is to say, who is the teacher’s teacher, and then who is his teacher and so on. Several teachers of Reiki have created or modified new or existing Reiki practices to enhance the process. This has generated several schools of Reiki learning.

Reiki is generally taught in 3 levels. At each level, the student receives an ‘Attunement’ from his teacher or master. The student also learns various techniques of providing healing and different symbols used for the healing process. Therefore it is essential to learn Reiki only in a classroom, as the ‘Attunement’ process cannot be achieved otherwise. Only a trained Reiki Master can give ‘Attunement’ and therefore teach other students. This is generally true with someone who has completed all the 3 levels of Reiki training.

While this process is non intrusive and involves simply, a healing touch, Reiki therapy is often subjected to a lot of criticism. That notwithstanding, it has withstood the test of time and proved, with a variety of results, that there is surely something of substance present within its concepts and processes. There are several success stories, the world over, which will attest to the benefits of Reiki healing energy. From providing relief to minor headaches to even curing cancer patients, Reiki has begun to gain acceptance as another branch of Alternative Medicine.

Shower filters: A great alternative to spring water bath
Our body as a site of joy requires protection and intervention. And to keep our body protective from various diseases we have become self organized around the themes of cleanliness, freshness and fitness. For cleanliness, regeneration and care of our body, we need leisurely bathing and showering in clean and healthy water. In other words, showering in clean and fresh water is a great way to release tension and anxiety. This has led water filter producing companies to produce high quality shower filter system so that a person can indulge in fresh and clean water.

Shower filter system can be defined as the cleansing system which makes water pure and clean for bathing. This system removes all the dust and impurities from the water making it fit for bathing and also it reduces chlorine, sulphur odor and other chemicals up to 95%. Shower filters prevent drying of skin and hair and give us smooth and shiny skin and hair. This handy device removes up to 99 percent dirt from the water and injects the water with up to 10 times more oxygen. It also inhibits mold and fungus, removes iron oxides, hydrogen sulfide and traces of heavy metals. This means more pressure and a better quality shower.

Apart from that, when chlorine mixed water is heated, it produces chlorine gas which can be dangerous to our organisms even if it is not ingested. The gas that is formed during heating of water has certain amounts of effects on our skin. And also when we inhale at the time of showering, the gas has an easy access to our lung tissues. This unseen enemy may lead to several health problems and you won’t even realize that the triggering elements are there when you take your shower. But a good shower filter will help reduce the negative effects of this by over 90%. The filter stops chlorine from getting into your system, thus improving your condition especially if your body is sensitive. Thus, shower filters provide you shelter against almost all contaminants and waterborne diseases in everyway.

The other plus point of these shower filters is that all these filters come in different shapes and sizes and can be fitted with every type of shower. Despite being so much expedient and classy, still these shower filters are very cheap in prices. In today’s pollution infected world, shower filters are great alternative to other expensive means and the perfect solution for those who don’t have any other option. As well as these are also easy to install and only thing you need to do is replace the cartridge once in a year.

Quantum Healing Author Reveals All
When you take a look at what is happening in your life, you may have difficulty making the connection between your THOUGHTS and what is actually happening. It seems like the two are separate. So, let's try to connect the dots.

Neither success nor failure happens by accident. The assumption of almost every person is that they believe something or someone OUTSIDE of them is responsible for their present circumstances.

The question that must be answered is WHO or WHAT is responsible for us NOT having what we want? Our parents? Our background? Our education? God? Destiny?

In fact, nothing OUTSIDE of you is responsible for not having what you want, even though it may appear that way. You experience what you experience in your life because you are in asleep and you don't even know it!

Everything that happens to us is because of our beliefs. For example, if you hold on to the belief that you are a victim of your circumstances, or that whatever happens to you is purely random or predestined, you will keep creating that same reality. This also becomes your excuse why others can have what you want, but it can never happen for you.

We live in a universe that is governed by a series of physical laws. We have no idea how gravity works, but we see evidence of it working every day. So it is not a matter of whether we BELIEVE it or not.

ONE law in particular is as certain as gravity and that ABSOLUTELY determines the outcome of your life. This law determines whether you have money, health, positive relationships, success or anything else in your life. It also determines whether you live a life that is full of worry, fear and stress, or a life that is carefree and happy.

This law is called The Law of Attraction. Without understanding how this law affects your life, your life will continue to appear chaotic and uncertain. The things you react to in your everyday life are a direct result of what you think, feel and believe.

Despite the fact that this law has been around before the beginning of time, most people who pride themselves as being "logical thinkers" will discredit it. They'll say that it's nonsense and it is not based on science or "reality".

As we know, for centuries we thought the earth was flat. But THINKING something is true or false does not make it so. What REALLY matters are RESULTS we experience when we live by those thoughts.

Let's take a moment and talk about the Law of Attraction and see if we can put it into perspective. You have heard the saying that "like attracts like". That is absolutely true. Why? Because everything in our universe is made of energy.

Science has proven that like energy attracts like energy. Everything on this planet - in this universe – including our thoughts, are made up of energy. If you don't believe this is true - that everything is made up of energy – then let me ask you this question. What do you think YOU'RE made up of?

You may say, "Flesh and bones". Okay, then the next logical question is, what are your flesh and bones made up of? Cells? Okay, then what are your cells made up of? Molecules. Okay, what are molecules made up of?

Eventually the answer must bring it back to the basic substance of which we are all made up of. When you run out of the physical stuff, you are left with only one thing: Energy! You cannot deny that we are made of energy. Quantum science has already proven that this is true. All energy has specific magnetic proprieties. We are basically magnets. As magnets, we are attracting things all day long, even if we are unaware of it.

Maybe this is easy for you to understand and accept. On the other hand, maybe your logical mind has trouble accepting that this is real. You may even be thinking that this is a bunch of metaphysical nonsense. It doesn't matter.

In the Science of Being Well Home Study Course, you will find many examples and stories to help you develop your own powers of healing using simply the power of your mind. This is not revolutionary. These secrets have been around for ages. To learn more, claim your FREE report of the First Secret to Abundant Health on www.thescienceofbeingwell.biz today!!

Get Into Asana Twists For A Yoga-Calm Mind
Asanas are simply the physical poses done in yoga. This article discusses one of the major categories, the twisting postures. Find out the benefits and cautions associated with them.
The most popular form of yoga in the western world is hatha yoga, which concentrates on a series of poses, or asanas, designed to increase flexibility, boost energy levels, improve balance and tone muscles.

In this form of yoga, the body is seen as an energy system, divided into areas or chakras. Each asana focuses on increasing energy flow to a particular chakra to stimulate organ function, enhance blood flow, and work specific muscles to generally improve your wellbeing in that chakra.

There are a huge variety of asanas and each person requires a tailored program of poses to address their particular aims or health concerns. Asanas are divided into broad categories with certain properties. One of the major categories is asana twists which are designed to extend and open the spinal channel, tone the abdominal muscles and untwist the mind.

The aim of most asana twists is to bring the shoulders to a right angle with the hips. The pose will be held for between thirty seconds and a minute and with each outward breath we should aim to twist a little further towards our goal. Asana twists can be performed standing or sitting.

One of the most popular asana twists is the spinal twist pose or Matsyendrasana, named after Sri Matsyendrasana who originally conceived hatha yoga. This pose realigns the spinal column, and is used to treat diabetes, constipation, dyspepsia and urinary problems. The spinal twist asana increases energy flow to the stomach, colon, liver, spleen, pancreas and kidneys.

All yoga asanas should initially be performed under the supervision of a qualified professional, but twists have particular potential for injury so great care should be taken. When performing a twist you should always lead with the belly or torso, and never the head. The head should be the last part of the body to twist.

You should be particularly careful about performing asana twists if you are pregnant, and if you do not want to avoid doing them altogether, you should always perform open twists. These are asanas that involve keeping the abdominal muscles soft and not contracting them as you would in a closed twist. Other people that should only attempt an open twist with a relaxed belly area are hernia sufferers, menstruating women, and anybody with detached retina or glaucoma.

Some people should avoid asana twists altogether. They are not recommended for people with high blood pressure or those prone to migraine headaches as the restriction of the blood vessels during a twist can trigger an attack.

Back problems such as lumbago, slipped discs or rheumatism can actually be treated by asana twists as they can relieve tension in the back muscles. However, great care should be taken, and professional supervision is mandatory.
