How to Reduce Memory Loss Due to Aging With our aging comes wisdom, but also an increasing loss of memory. There are however a number of things we can do to substantially slow the rate of memory loss and keep our brains healthy. All of us know elderly people who suffer from memory loss.
The causes of loss of memory are many, but may include disease, depression, emotional trauma and genetic causes, We are going to focus on what is considered the most prevelant cause of memory loss, namely aging.
On average even a healthy person can expect to lose about 1% of his nerve cells (including brain cells) each year starting in our twenties. So an average seventy-five year old could expect to function with only about one-half of the memory functioning that he enjoyed in his younger years.
But there are many steps we can take to help slow the rate at which we lose our memory as the years pass. In this article we will focus on only a few of the most crucial ones. For our purposes, we shall assume that no neuropsychological issues exist and that we are speaking about an otherwise healthy person, whose memory loss is the result solely of his getting older.
There exist quite a few changes we can choose to make to our lifestyle and our diet which may help the performance of our memory. Amongst these are lessening our alcohol consumption, avoiding cigarettes, and adding to our diet foods rich in protein, fiber, vitamins and especially antioxidants (including vegetables and fruits), as the latter can help with the functioning of the brain.
Some other recommended dietary improvements are switching from red meats to fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, and staying away from foods containing chemicals like MSG and preservatives. Also reducing the stress you deal with in your daily life can help to reduce the rate of memory loss. Of course, participating in an exercise program or a daily regime of yoga can significantly lower stress.
Most people error in not taking nutritional and herbal supplements designed to improve the health and functioning of their brain. We will briefly mention a few here. Vinpocetine and Ginkgo biloba are blood vessel dilators that permit more oxygen to reach the brain. Two vitamins that are useful are Vitamin B and thiamine, being antioxidants that can help protect brain cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Other supplements to consider in order to reduce the rate of memory loss caused by our aging are phosphatidylserine and acetylcarnitine, both of which have been employed with patients suffering with Alzheimer's disease with some success. In addition, the herbal supplements bacopa from India and the Korean ginseng apparently can improve the functioning of the brain, and in particular one’s memory.
There are several mental activities that can help us retain our memory as the years pass. An active brain is more likely to fight off the ravages of age. Engaging in a new mental activity, such as learning to play a new instrument, studying a foreign language and taking flying lessons, are just a few examples. Making a conscious effort to remember particular things, like people’s names or birthdates, may seem trivial but when engaged in regularly often helps to keep the brain active and sharp. Also there are various memory techniques available that can aid with specific things you may wish to be able to easily recall later, including repetition, mnemonics (these are mental games designed to aid in memorization, such as the invented name Roy G. Biv where each letter is the first letter of one of the primary colors) and simply writing the words you wish to be able to recall on a piece of paper and then repeating them orally a few times.
The bottom line is that if one makes the decision to lead a life that is active and engaged, both physically and mentally, is prudent in selecting the foods that will be the basis of one’s diet, complements those with appropriate nutritional and herbal supplements, and foresakes habits like drinking and smoking, the rate at which our brains lose their ability to remember things can be slowed to a great degree.
You may wish to check out the www.clearer-thinking.com website. The web site discusses memory enhancement, stress reduction and how to increase concentration by employing a product known as ThinkStraight|, which is a supplement containing natural ingredients designed to maximize the overall health of the brain. |

How Enzymes Factor in Anti Aging Enzymes are critical to your overall health and are a necessary part of any effective anti aging strategy. Enzymes are needed for every chemical reaction that takes place in your body. An increasing number of studies have shown the effectiveness of proper enzyme intake to combat heart disease, help diabetics control their blood sugar levels, and help alleviate arthritic symptoms. Proper enzyme intake also improves digestion, elimination, and detoxification. With over 100 different enzymes in the body I won’t have the time or the space to discuss each one, but I want to give you an overview on how important enzymes are to an anti aging strategy.
Enzymes are proteins that act like catalysts by binding to an initial substance and converting it into something else. Because of this enzymes are needed for every chemical reaction that takes place in your body. No mineral, vitamin or hormone can do any significant work without enzymes. It is for this reason that enzymes are critical for your health and factor so importantly in an effective anti aging strategy.
Think in 3’s! There are 3 classes of enzymes:
Digestive – which digest our food. Metabolic – which run our bodies. Food – which come from raw foods and start food digestion.
For this article, we are going to look at 3 types of digestive enzymes and their function:
Amylases are enzymes that digest carbohydrates. Lipases are enzymes that digest fats. Proteases are enzymes that digest proteins.
Some say, "You Are What You Eat!" but I say, "You Are What You Digest!" Food enzymes from raw foods help start the digestive process by helping to break down complex foods into simple structures. That’s why the chewing process is so important. Now, I’m not talking about eating like a cow that continues to chew its cud but neither is it a benefit to you to bite, chew once and then swallow. These food enzymes are beneficial to the digestive enzymes because the more the food is already broken down prior to entering the lower portion of the stomach, the less the digestive enzymes are needed to complete the breakdown. And, the more your food is broken down into its simplest form, the easier it will be for your small intestine to absorb these nutrients to allow your blood stream to delivery them to the needed areas.
What is the Natural Enemy of Enzymes? The enzymes in raw foods are destroyed by heat. In fact, cooking any food at temperatures above 116 degrees Fahrenheit kills all enzymes. This then increases the amount of energy the body needs to digest the cooked food and it increases the amount of time needed in the digestive tract to try to absorb nutrients. This puts wear and tear on your pancreas. If there are no food enzymes to help predigest the food, then the pancreas must put out the "HELP WANTED" sign to look for metabolic enzymes that can be converted into digestive enzymes. This can stress the pancreas and rob the body of the metabolic enzymes needed to create the energy your body needs to survive.
Those Nutritionists Got It Right Again! The nutritionists who keep recommending 5-8 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables per day are really trying to help your body work at a higher level of wellness. As stated at the beginning of this article, there are an increasing number of studies showing the effectiveness of proper enzyme intake to combat heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Proper enzyme intake also improves digestion, elimination, and detoxification. If you factor in the studies from the Journal of Longevity Research, which praise enzymes for their ability to combat cancer, then you begin to see why enzymes are so important to your health and anti aging strategy.
Let’s Have Some Fun! Let me briefly educate you on a couple of enzymes that you can throw into your next conversation to impress your family and friends:
Lipase – Lipase is highly effective in the digestion of fats. Without it fat stagnates and accumulates in the organs and arteries. If you’re talking with someone who eats most of their meals at the fast food joint you could say something like "Did you want some extra lipase to go with that double cheeseburger?"
P4D1 – P4D1 can actually stimulate the repair of the DNA molecule. It has also been shown to destroy the protein sheath of cancer cells so that the white blood cells can attack and destroy them. Next time you’re at a Star Wars convention you could say something like "Dude, that P4D1 droid is awesome!"
Cytochrome Oxidase – Cytochrome Oxidase anchors an important chain of enzymes that produce energy in the mitochondria of the cell. Next time you’re at the spa you can say something like "Wow, that Cytochrome Oxidase therapy really got my energy flowing!"
Just think what you could do with enzymes like Catalase or Hexokinase or Superoxide Dismutase. Well, I think you get the picture. Enzymes need to be a big part of any anti aging strategy. And that means that raw foods, especially fruits and vegetables, need to be an important part of your daily routine.

Ginkgo has been shown to:
· Increase mental alertness
· Enhance vitality levels
· Improve circulatory health
· Improve blood vessel health
· Enhance sex drive.
Unlike many herbs where claims made which are not backed up by medical research and substantiation, Ginkgo is one of the most researched herbs in history, and medical evidence points to its many health benefits.
Turn Back the Ageing Clock
Its high antioxidant activity is renowned for fighting age related conditions.
All over the world, millions of people have claimed Ginkgo to be beneficial in the fight against the gradual erosion of energy, associated with aging.
History
The ginkgo is the oldest living tree species - geological records indicate this plant has been growing on earth for 100 to 200 million years.
Chinese monks kept the tree in existence, as they considered it a sacred herb with a wide range of health benefits.
Arriving in Europe in the 1700’s, it is now a commonly prescribed drug in many countries.
It is also one of the best researched, and popular medical herbs used in the world today.
Benefits
Ginkgo has been shown to be nutritional support for:
· Mental alertness
· Enhanced vitality levels
· Better circulatory health
· Better blood vessel health
Its high antioxidant activity is particularly valuable in fighting a wide range of age related conditions.
How it works
Few herbs have been as extensively researched as ginkgo biloba extract (GBE).
Throughout the past thirty years, around five hundred pharmacological studies have been conducted on the proprietary, standardized extracts of the ginkgo biloba leaf.
This research has concluded that the herb has three major health benefits:
1. It increases cognitive function and memory
2. It helps Improve circulation throughout the body
3. It helps slow the aging process
Ginkgo contains the following active substances:
· Flavonoids
· Terpene lactones
· Ginkgolides A, B, and C
· Bilobalide
· Quercetin
· Kaempferol.
1. Antioxidant Benefits
Ginkgo acts as a powerful antioxidant and contributes to the oxidation of free radicals, which are associated with premature aging and dementia.
Antioxidants protect eyesight, the cardiovascular, and central nervous system.
The herb has been used in the treatment of a wide variety of circulation related disorders, such as:
· Diabetic peripheral vascular disease
· Raynaud's syndrome
· Hemorrhoids
· Varicose veins.
2. Sexual Benefits
Ginkgo also helps control the transformation of cholesterol to plaque associated with the hardening of arteries. It can also relax constricted blood vessels, which has seen it used as a supplement to increase both male and female libido.
3. Memory Enhancer and Energy Booster
Ginkgo active compounds increasing the flow of oxygen to the brain, as well as optimizing the brain's use of glucose.
When consumed, food is converted into glucose - a sugar that can easily be used by the body's cells for energy.
By helping the body to make glucose available for energy use, ginkgo enhances both mental alertness and memory function.
Ginkgo therefore helps to combat fatigue by its increase in glucose utilization.
RDA for Ginkgo
There is no RDA for ginkgo since it is not an essential nutrient, but many experts recommend taking 40-80 mg, 3 times a day, on an empty stomach for best results.
It can take around 12 weeks for the benefits of ginkgo biloba supplementation to become apparent.

DHEA – Anti Aging Benefits DHEA is seen as protecting against many diseases, increasing sexual libido and giving users a feeling of well being and acting as an general all round anti aging supplement. DHEA as an anti aging supplement is seen as a powerful aid in the fight against aging and maintaining youth.
It is seen as protecting against many diseases, increasing sexual libido and giving users a feeling of well being and acting as an general all round anti aging supplement.
DHEA What Is It
DHEA is a hormone naturally produced in the human body. It is the sole precursor hormone responsible for the production and regulation of every other steroid and sex hormone in the body.
DHEA is the only hormone that declines with age and declines signal a variety of age related diseases. It is generally seen as a powerful anti-aging treatment.
DHEA is a natural human hormone (a steroid) actually produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands. DHEA is additionally produced in the gonads (sexual organs), in adipose tissue (fatting tissues) and the brain itself.
DHEA is in fact, the most abundant hormone in the human body. Only in humans is DHEA the dominant steroid hormone. Humans produce DHEA in greater quantity than any other species.
DHEA As Supplement For Sexual Health
DHEA is a general tonic of well being as helps maintain sex hormone levels therefore increasing libido
DHEA Anti aging properties
The famous biochemist Stephen Cherniske has shown that one of the most consistent and devastating aspects of aging is the emergence of the metabolic syndrome, which is also termed Syndrome X.
Decreased insulin sensitivity, free testosterone, and HDL, along with increased LDL, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, characterize the metabolic syndrome.
The decline in DHEA secretion contributes to the metabolic syndrome and its related diseases such as heart attack, stroke, and type II diabetes.
Results from the use of DHEA are gradual, and over time, one should not wait for some dramatic change.
The anti-aging properties of DHEA are especially gradual, as is aging itself, and may be noticed over an extended period only.
There are some short-term effects, such as in weight control and anti-depression, but it may also be noted that in addition to dietary supplementation, regular strenuous exercise also naturally raises the DHEA level in the human body.
The use of DHEA as a dietary supplementation is believed to have the following affects:
• It maintains sex hormone levels • Increases the production of antioxidant enzymes in the liver
• DHEA blocks an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (g6pd) which is needed to produce fat tissue and also promotes cancer cell growth
• Relieves stress
• Strengthens the immune system
• Improves mental clarity as people age
• Helps the body burn calories for energy rather than store them as fat
• Declining levels of the hormone DHEA are implicated in Alzheimer's disease diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, arthritis, obesity, cancer, atherosclerosis and heart disease and depression
• Increases muscle mass and strength
• Beneficial in increasing feelings of well being and libido and acts as a sex stimulant
DHEA is the subject of intensive and continuous research, but more and more people are now looking at DHEA as one of the key anti aging supplements.

The American Way Can Fight Aging,..Join It. How the American approach participated in making Cardiology more amendale, now it is dealing with Aging, hurry to join it. Enlarge ImageBut what is the American medical way ?
More than 22,000 healthy American Doctors were involved in the "Physician's Health study" at Harvard university. The results of the study were published in 1989 and revealed that 1 Aspirin a day reduces the incidence of heart attack by half, and that the drug can also help prevent thrombosis or stroke.
AcetylSalicylic acid was first synthesized in 1899 in Germany.
The American Aspirin study, the American cholesterol study, the American drugs for lowering cholesterol and labelling food with its cholesterol content, all participated in making heart diseases are by far more amendable than other chronic serious disease.
Herbs are present in the world for 1000's of years, and some of them are present in Europe for 100 years, but the impetus of the international interest in herbs was intensified after the American way of medicine had adopted herbs to be submitted to heavy, organized, multicenter investigation.
The American medical way when adopted herbal support of liver was contradictory to the predominant classic medical way adopting the adage" Don't whip the exhausted horse", yet it proved to be better than leaving the liver to its miserable fate.
The American way of medicine is now directed to study aging, all and every aspect that can help fight aging. How can we hurry in implementing the new findings to fight aging?
For one to advice others about how to improve their health, he should put safety in the first place. So, apart from the arguimented items like hormones which should be prescribed by a physician after lab investigation as a replacement therapy, or to treat life threateningdisease ( e.g.cancer), I prefer to only discuss nutrition( macro- andmicro-nutrients) in view of the new findings elucidated by the American medical way.
Macro-nutrients are those macromolecules (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) needed by the body more than one time every day in gross amounts calculated by grams.
Micro-nutrients are those elements or compounds needed by the body. Some are calculated in milli-grams and others are calculated in micro-grams.They need to be present whether taken daily with food or suppliedat intervals.
The question arising here -which is logic- aren't all these nutrientspresent in our food? and as long as there is no deficiency of a certainnutrient, what is the point of recommending this or that nutrient, moreover, why it is supplied in a fabricated form?
Any nutrient should be absorbed, transported and metabolised, and all these processes involve protein molecules, these molecules act at their maximal activities at young age and upon aging they are submitted to glycation, cross-linking...etc. with an altered responce to endogenous hormones.
An example is Sarcopenia ( amino acid and muscle loss with aging) in which there is age associated alteration in the muscle anabolic responce to nutritional stimuli and a decline in protein intake. It responds to supply of essential amino acids and branched chain amino acids (Leucine- IsoLeucine- Valine), Leucine was found to have a direct effect on initiation of mRNA translation.
Now, how can you start fight aging the American way?
CELL VOLUME: Cell turgor has a positive effect on metabolism, and cell shrinkage has a negative one. Presence of water inside the cell (which limits its volume is governed by the presence of Potassium which is the predominant element(ion) inside. presence of Potassium in the cell is determined by intake of fruits, vegetables and unprocesed food (processing causes potassium to leak out of the cells), as well as water intake.
The best procedure you can do is to take a lot of juices(veg.& fruits).
CARBOHYDRATES: you should reduce the EXTRA carbohydrates, specially the sugar and starchy stuff in order to : 1- Reduce weight. 2- Reduce fat production. 3- Reduce cholesterol production. 4- Reduce the abundance of sugars that causes glycation of proteins. 5- Increase Growth Hormone secretion. A special mention is to increasing fiber and essential sugars intake. Avoid carbohydrates intake 2 hours after exercise.
FATS : The same old known story of reducing cholesterol and saturated fats(both come from one source i.e.the animal fat) and hydrogenated fats, as well as increasing intake of polyunsaturated acids containing fats(corn, sunflower, canula, soy..et).I am biased to Soy oil as it contains: 1- Good % of polyunsaturated fatty acids( 61%). 2- good % of Lecithin which has positve effects on bad cholesterol (LDL) and liver cell membranes. 3- Good % of LINLENIC acid(%7) which produces unmatched pair of prostaglandins, these are, the 3 series of prostaglandins(PG3) which are potent inhibitors of platelet aggregation, and Thromboxane3 (TX3) which are weak aggregators, instead of the 2 series (PG2&TX2) with the net result of thinning blood and making it less sticky. Other good sources of Linolenic acid include Flax seed and Primrose oils.
PROTEINS : It should receive a special attention as proteins are the closest macro-molecule to the governing body control regulators; nerves, hormones and DNA. The bottom-line of utilizing proteins to fight aginf is to increase its intake with a special care of the essential amino acids.Yet the American medical categorized them into some groups: 1- Neurotransmitters precursors group and includes; Tyrosine - PhenylAlanine - Methionine - Cysteine. 2- Growth hormone secretory activators and includes; Lysine-Arginine(or L-Arginine pyroglutamate if combined with Lysine) Ornithine - Glycine. 3- Muscle weakness (Sarcopenia) group and includes; Primarily the branched chain amino acids(Valine-Leucine-IsoLeucine) besides other essential amino acids. 4- Healing group and includes; Cysteine-Glycine-Threonine. Some individuals with inborn-error metabolism can't take some amino acids(those with phenylketoneuria can't take phenylalanine), but forthe normal persons amino acids have v. important role in the body( Arginine is the precursor of Nitric oxide (NO) which causes relaxationof smooth muscles of blood vessels and is the end product of coronary vasodilators and dugs for impotence like Viagra.
VITAMINS : They are classified according to their solubility in water to:-
1-FAT-SOLUBLE VITAMINS : They include Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K. Therapeutic doses of these vitamins are kept for therapeutic indications as their lipid-solubility infers some risks; 1- They can be accumulated over a long period of administration of high doses and stored in the nuclei of the cells. 2- They act mostly like a hormone, their over dose can produce undesirable side effects. The anti-oxidant properties of some of them make them to be incorporated in some antioxidant preparations, yet the use of these preparation should include some periods of rest. Other alternatives with similar structure and antioxidant effect include: * Beta-Carotene; the vitamin A precursor of plant origin. It has no effect of vitamin A effects and should be converted in the body into vitamin A, but it is a potent antioxidant and can be used for this purpose. It is present in the orange, yellow and green vegetables and fruits( Carrots-Sweet potatoes-Cantaope-Appricot-Pink Grape fruit..). * Wheat-Germ oil is a rich source of vitamin E,as well as some otherfruit oils. It is of great value to the skin.
2- WATER-SOLUBLE VITAMINS : One of the most widely distributed group of nutrients in nature and inthe body. There is no problem of its use in amounts many times higherthan its recommended dosage and for any period of time, as long as it is economic, since the surplus amounts are excreted in the urine. As a group they represent the most important accessories of metabolism. Some of them in high doses are used to treat some disease(vitamin B6 inmorning sickness in pregnants is just one example).
MINERALS : The best source is the pharmaceutical preparations which include them with vitamins.
To summarize the American medical way, here are the 7 basic dietaryguidelines presented to the Americans by their Dept.of Agricultureand Dept.of Health and Human Resources: 1- Eat a variety of foods. 2- Maintain desiramle weight. 3- Avoid too much fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. 4- Eat food with adequate starch and fibers. 5- Avoid too much sodium .6- Avoid too much sugar. 7- If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.
I can add: Avoid unnecessary food extras. |

6 Aging, Fitness, and Health Myths Debunked-Part 6 of 6 1. People Are Living Much Longer 2. Americans Age Normally 3. Longevity is Beyond Your Control 4. Longevity Equals Pain, Disability, and Disease 5. "You Can’t Teach Old Dogs New Tricks" 6. It’s Too Late Enlarge ImageMyth #6 "It’s Too Late"
If you have presence of mind and can get out of bed, it is never too late to be helped by the changes you make—never. Studies show time and time again that exercise, even starting at the age of ninety, can improve muscle strength, balance, bone density, metabolism, and decrease body fat.
The primary reason why muscles and bones get weaker as we get older is because we don’t use them, not because of the aging process.
How true the old adage is: Use or lose.
Most Americans choose to not use, therefore they lose. But the good news is: it is never too late to consciously build up your level of health and fitness with the right choices.
The basic principles of health, fitness, and longevity don’t change with age. No matter how old you are, whole, unrefined plant foods and the decrease of fat, cholesterol, animal products, toxins such as coffee and alcohol, salt, and refined foods, along with exercise, are critical in decreasing blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and the risk of chronic, degenerative diseases, such as most cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and strokes.
Did you know that the most famous doctor of all, Dr. Spock, improved his health at the age of 90 by adopting a plant-based diet? As recounted by Dan Georgakas, Eula Weaver had a long history of debilitating heart disease to the point of, at the age of 81, not being able to walk more than a few steps. With exercise and significant changes in her diet, by the age of 85 she was running races and setting records.
You have a choice: you can do what you may have always done and watch your health spiral down as you grow older, or you can transform your body and your health, starting right now.
The decision is yours. |

6 Aging, Fitness and Health Myths Debunked-Part 4 of 6 1. People Are Living Much Longer 2. Americans Age Normally 3. Longevity is Beyond Your Control 4. Longevity Equals Pain, Disability, and Disease 5. "You Can’t Teach Old Dogs New Tricks" 6. It’s Too Late Enlarge ImageMyth #4
Longevity Equals Pain, Disability, and Disease
How often is the comment made that people simply don’t want to live a long time? Why would anyone want to live a long time when old age brings pain, suffering, and the loss of bodily functions, mobility, independence, and even the loss of dignity?
Although that is exactly what happens to most of the elderly in so-called modern countries, there are individuals and groups of people who age with grace, comfort, and activity. Look at the over ninety-year-old Jack LaLanne who has spent his entire life advocating exercise, loading up on fruits and vegetables, and not eating the junk.
The Abkasians, who live in the Georgia Republic in the former USSR, are one such group of long-lived people. Why do these people live to often be one-hundred years old and age so well? Are their bodies made differently than ours or do they own the secret to the "Fountain of Youth?"
According to Dan Georgakas, their youthful secrets are:
• Lean body mass and the cultural disapproval of excess fat • Diet of mostly fresh fruits, vegetables, and plant foods with no coffee, sugar, and very little meat, butter, or salt • Caloric intake of between 1500 and 2000 calories (Americans commonly intake 2500 to 4000 calories) • Lifelong exercise, especially walking • Lifelong work, steady but not stressful or to exhaustion • Few smoke • Reverence for the aged
By observing other cultures, we could learn how to dramatically increase our chances of nearing the hundred year mark and do so with a full, purposeful life.
Now who wouldn’t want to live a long, fulfilling life? |
