It prevented the action of two enzymes, associated with UV light and the destruction of the skin cell's extracellular matrix, which happens in premature aging of the skin. Sunlight also destroys beta carotene in cells after sun exposure, so this beta carotene has to be replaced.
Beta carotene has been reported as having a mild sunscreen effect too, though it needs to be taken as a supplement to get this effect.
The skin care supplement beauty market is still not a strongly developed one however, as these types of supplements tend to be more expensive than other supplements. And there needs to be more research and clinical trials to prove which products do what they are designed to.

Coffee - The Anti Aging Brew? Coffee beans have yielded surprising discoveries in the anti aging battle. Green coffee beans offer a host of health benefits without the jittery effects associated with drinking too much caffeine. An extract of green coffee beans has been found to have a stronger antioxidant effect than established antioxidants like green tea and grape seed extract.
The active constituent in coffee that is responsible for its many health benefits is a compound called chlorogenic acid. It neutralizes free radicals, and addresses the problem of hydroxyl radicals, both of which can lead to cellular degeneration if left unchecked. Chlorogenic acid also helps regulate metabolism. Compared to green tea and grape seed extract, green coffee bean extract is twice as effective in absorbing oxygen free radicals.
One of the advantages of using the green coffee bean extract is that the negative effects of coffee are avoided. The chlorogenic acid is thought to boost metabolism by changing the way glucose is taken up by the body. And it does contain caffeic acids, which give a boost to energy levels like regular coffee does. But unlike boiled coffee, green coffee bean extract contains no cafestol, which is a diterpene. Along with its diterpene relative kahweol, cafestol increases concentrations of the 'bad' cholesterol, LDL, to levels that over a lifetime might increase the risk of coronary heart disease by as much as 20% These diterpenes also had an effect on the levels of liver enzymes measured. When these are elevated it is an indicator of stress on the liver. However the study that measured this found this was a transient effect, and also that the levels of liver enzymes were much lower than those with liver disease.
As a side note on the health effect of the diterpenes found in regular coffee, it was found that by simply drinking filter coffee, none of these effects on cholesterol levels or the liver took place. The coffee filter removed the offending diterpenes. And levels of these diterpenes in instant coffee are low.
Other benefits of green coffee bean extract include an increase in the effectiveness of pain killers, especially for migraine medications; a reduction in the risk of diabetes; and assisting the body burn a higher proportion of lipids (fats) compared to carbohydrates, which could help with muscle fatigue for athletes and bodybuilders.
Interestingly, on the subject of caffeine and liver disease, further studies have indicated it may in fact support liver health for some people. Those who were at high risk of developing liver disease due to drinking too much alcohol were found less likely to suffer liver damage if they drank more than two cups of coffee or tea a day. This was a population based study, not a clinical trial, and so is not conclusive on the subject. But it does offer some promising information. Those drinking in excess of two cups or more a day were half as likely to develop liver disease compared to those drinking less than one cup a day. Researchers do not know what caused this protective effect.
One of the criticisms of coffee in regards to health is that it leaches calcium from the bones. But this effect has been found to be overemphasized, at least in children. And adults who consume a diet with sufficient levels of calcium will be protected from the small amount of calcium that is lost due to coffee consumption.
So the old axiom that caffeine can stunt a child's growth is a myth. It was based on the fact that in older studies, caffeine was associated with low bone mass because those studies were done on elderly people who both drank a lot of coffee and had diets that were low in calcium. Recent studies in the US followed 80 teenagers over 6 years, and found no difference in the bone density of those with a high level of caffeine in their diet, compared to those teenagers who had little caffeine. Other studies determined that the amount of calcium lost from bones is small and can be balanced by having sufficient calcium in your diet.

The Anti-Aging Wonders of Hyaluronic Acid Find out about the possible anti-aging benefits of a little known health supplement called Hyaluronic Acid ABC News has recently focused on the possible anti-aging benefits of hyaluronic acid, also known as Hyaluron or HA. More than 10 percent of the population of his village is 85 or older, which is about ten times the average in America.
Some studies suggest that the reason that residents Yuzuri Hara, known as "The Village of Long Life," live such long and healthy lives is mainly due to the fact that the local diet that is unique to the village features a starchy vegetable which is particularly rich in HA. In fact a large pharmaceutical company in Japan began Research & Development on a pill supplement containing HA. When they tested the pills on one thousand individuals, around half of them reported smoother skin and even improved eyesight. Hyaluronic acid has also proven effective in lubricating arthritic joints as well, as certain studies have shown positive results from injections into the joints of Hyaluronic Acid, a component of the bodies own lubricant fluid, that may delay the need for a joint replacement.
Hyaluronic Acid is plentiful in our bodies when we are born, but it's levels slowly recede over time. This reduction in HA levels may be a big part of the aging process which we see.
Hyaluronic Acid occurs in the deeper layers of our skin known as the dermis and it appears to help keep the skin smooth because of it's water retention qualities. Hyaluronic Acid also apparently helps to repair skin wounds and certain other problems.
In addition, it appears to help maintain collagen levels. Under normal circumstances, collagen depletion is widely considered to be a prime factor in subpar skin tone as well as elasticity of the skin, something that is often associated with the visual aging process.
Hyaluronic Acid makes up about eighty percent of the human eye, a fact that is surprising to some people. It is a sort of shock absorber to the retina which helps to prevent trauma to the eye. It has only been recently that hyaluronic acid has been considered effective in oral form although it has long been used in injections into the joints.

The first and foremost thing is right eating. No, this is not about giving up on all the food you love because age is catching up with you that only induces cravings and makes one binge. It is not even about all protein, all carbohydrate or all vitamin diets or nutrition out of a bottle. It is all about eating right, livings right and above all, thinking right.
A very important component of the aging process is the increase of acid content n the body. With age, our kidneys function differently and as time passes, the nitrogen compound present in our muscles protein gets reduced, even if we do external pumping, exercises and even weight lifting. The kidneys are responsible for breaking down this nitrogen compound, and this means that it is washed away from our body as a liquid waste. This means that the bulky muscles of our youth are getting ejected from our body in the form of urine. This acidification of the body also induces deficiency of calcium in the bones, which shows up as osteoporosis in elderly people.
Obviously, the key to suppress this process (no, no one can escape this fate…it is karma, he who is born has to die) is to offset this alkalinity in the body gradually making it less acidic in nature.
One of the most effective ways to make your body more alkaline is to consume fresh greens. Eating spinach can actually make one more muscular, even if one does not believe in Popeye.
The key to increasing alkalinity in the body is consuming a supplement called Potassium Bicarbonate in the diet, and seeing the effects over as little as 18 days. In addition to maintaining a diet rich in leafy vegetables and low on heavy proteins, seniors should also follow some simple guidelines, actually the most repeated warnings of a bad lifestyle. Smoking and too much alcohol ruins the skin and the liver. So avoid these and the glare of harsh sun. The trick to stay well hydrated, in order to maintain the pH level of the skin and the body system, one must drink plenty of liquids everyday.
Exercise play a very important part in keeping the body fit and supple but again, in middle age there may be problems that one faces in keeping up with a very active lifestyle. Joint pains, back problems and ligament weakness often surfaces just before the real aging factor starts. Of course, our metabolism slows down significantly after we reach the midlife point, almost around our thirties and forties, but even with this slowdown, it is important to be always active. Nothing brings on age faster than stress or a sedentary lifestyle – two extremes. So enough exercise, preferably a non-violent variety, is recommended. Of course, a healthy middle aged person who is continuously doing weight training may find the sailing smooth but people who are starting late in life, should stick to exercises that gently and smoothly take care of the fitness, toning, stretching and keeping the muscles and bones well-oiled.

To paraphrase a popular 1960s song: "The times, they are a' changin." And so is grandma. As opposed to the grandmother of forty years ago, today's grandmother is likely to work in corporate America, bench press 75 pounds and travel to Europe, South America, or even Nepal.
A glance at the American Associated of Retired Persons (AARP) Web site (www.aarp.org), for example, demonstrates that today's seniors are eschewing retirement and continuing to stay engaged and active participants in society. The site offers information and resources on topics including "money and work," "the volunteer experience," and "computers and technology."
Ironically, while examples of seniors enjoying productive lives abound, most Americans continue to view aging as a totally negative process. Out of ignorance or perhaps fear, Americans view aging as a process of decline and steady erosion of the joys of living.
The good news for seniors, as well as those who will one day become seniors, is that a good deal of the negative associations with aging are, in fact, wrong or exaggerated. The real story, as noted in the groundbreaking study on Successful Aging sponsored by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, is that only 30 percent of how we age can be attributed to genes; the remaining 70 percent is determined by our lifestyle choices. Yes, we can choose to be healthier seniors, and it's never too late.
I'd like to address some frequently held misconceptions on aging that I too often hear in my work with seniors, and then provide the facts as we now know them...the rest of the story.
1. Misconception: Aging means Alzheimer's.
Fact: Of people over 65, only 10 percent have Alzheimer's disease. Most forms of decreased mental function and dementia are caused by disuse, i.e. letting the mind get lazy. Seniors can help prevent the loss of mental function and some forms of dementia by stimulating the brain with simple exercises that challenge the memory, such as doing crossword puzzles, playing word games, conversing with friends and family, learning new skills or traveling.
2. Misconception: Aging means physical inactivity.
Fact: Seniors are not only capable of exercise, but require it to maintain independence, good mental function, and to reduce risk of disease. Aerobics (walking, swimming, etc.) is fundamental, yet strength training produces dramatic results, allowing seniors who previously required assistance with daily living to become independent again. Stretching and balance exercises, like yoga or tai chai, can help arthritis and prevent falls. With non-rigorous but consistent exercises, seniors can achieve high levels of functioning. Just look at congressman and astronaut John Glenn or 82-year-old Payton Thomas, senior world record holder for the 100-yard dash.
3. Misconception: Aging means fewer or no contributions to society.
Fact: Current retirees are more interested in an active life, including continuing to work, than their parents' generation, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll in March 1999.
* 15 million older persons volunteer, nearly half the 65-plus population in the U.S.
* About 3.7 million older Americans (12 percent of the population) were in the labor force in 1998, constituting approximately 2.8 percent of the U.S. labor force.
4. Misconception: Aging means the end of learning.
Fact: Learning is, in fact, a lifelong process. Seniors with no training have embraced computer technology and are the most rapidly growing computer-literate demographic group. Likewise, seniors have mastered other technologies that were unknown in their youth. More and more, colleges and universities are realizing the huge demand for continuing education in this population.
5. Misconception: Aging means loneliness and depression.
Fact: Unfortunately, this was indeed the fate of many previous generations of older Americans, mostly because society had no role for them. Today's seniors increasingly are finding alternatives to being alone, such as house-sharing or moving to senior living communities, where they can maintain social connections, continue to learn, and contribute to the larger community through employment or volunteerism.
Recent research has smashed the stereotypes of aging. Growing older can be rewarding and fun. Seniors who take charge of their health, stay engaged in life, and use, rather than lose, their physical and mental capabilities, can enjoy later years filled with vitality and joy. As former Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham once put it, "No one can avoid aging, but aging productively is something else."
