The erection is triggered and controlled by the following events:
- Something stimulates sensorial bodies in the genital zone or other senses. Impulses are then sent from the senses through nerves and the spinal cord towards the brain, and reaches the upper areas of the brain. The brain then recognizes these impulses as something sexually arousing. Also thoughts originating in the brain itself may be recognized as something sexually arousing.
- The higher brain areas having recognized some arousing events then send impulses down to the limbic system at the lower area of the brain. It is the limbic system that actually produces the feeling of excitement.
- The limbic system sends signals down the spinal cord and out to the genital area through nerves called nervi erigentes - a part of the parasympatic nervous system
- The signals reaching the penis and the rest of the genital zone then trigger erection and engorgement of the area between the man’s legs.
- Stimuli to the penile or genital sensorial bodies do not need to reach the brain to result in an erection. Areas in the spinal cord will also recognize the stimuli and get excited. Then the spinal cord also by its own sends erectile impulses back to the genital area.
- The sensorial bodies in the genital area will also be stimulated mechanically by the erection. Since stimulation of these bodies trigger erection, the erection process is self enforcing. A beginning erection thus trigger even more erection. |

In movies and on TV, smokers are portrayed as tough, rugged, independent men who always get what they want and are irresistible to women. But the truth is far removed from this rosy picture. Experts say smoking can make you impotent and over 120,000 British men are suffering because of this!
This was revealed by Dr Godfrey Fowler from Oxford University's Primary Health Department who said that thousands of men in their 30s and 40s in the UK have smoking-related impotence. Because of this, British Medical Association (BMA) officers said cigarette packets should warn smokers of this risk.
"The tobacco companies have spent a fortune trying to persuade people that smoking is sexy, macho and cool, but an impotence warning would bring home the sad and embarrassing reality,” said Clive Bates, director of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH).
"What we want is for girls to look at young men and think: 'He smokes - he's going to be impotent - I'm not interested.' This would be especially effective for the under 40s," added Ann Craig, managing director of the Impotence Association.
This is not the first time smoking has been implicated in impotence. Dr. Jiang He, steward associate professor of epidemiology and medicine at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans, said men who smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day had a 60 percent higher risk of impotence compared to non-smokers.
The risk was lower in men who had fewer cigarettes but still high compared to non-smokers. He’s study involved over 4,000 Chinese men and took into consideration the subjects’ smoking habits and the amount of sex they had.
“After statistically accounting for other erectile function influences, researchers found that current smokers had a 31 percent higher risk for (impotence) compared to men who had never smoked. A similar difference was seen in former smokers who had a 35 percent higher risk,” said AltPenis.Com.
If you have high blood pressure, it gets worse. Hypertensive smokers are 26 times more likely to be impotent than non-smokers, according to Dr John Spangler who led American researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Centre. He added that the risk of impotence in former smokers with high blood pressure is 11 times higher.
“Smoking affects erection in a number of ways. Long-term damage is caused by a build up of fatty deposits blocking arteries and restricting blood flow. But every time a cigarette is lit, nicotine circulates in the blood, constricting blood vessels and restricting the rush of blood essential to triggering an erection,” explained Jenny Hope in the Daily Mail.
Ironically, the BMA said very few are aware of the smoking – impotence link. In fact, a poll conducted for ASH revealed that 88 percent of smokers have no idea whatsoever of the link. Adding to the deception is that smokers are often portrayed as glamorous and sophisticated individuals and smoking is usually associated with sex, virility, and success. Doctors say it’s time to wake up and see smoking in a new light. |

It seems every day there is a new, touted herbal alternative to the male enhancement and impotence drug Viagra. The drug has ingrained itself so much in modern American culture that there are entire web pages devoted to Viagra jokes and millions of internet searches a year to buy Viagra online.
But are there really safe supplements that act as natural alternatives to Viagra that work just as well, without the possible side effects that have scared some men off, and prompted them to seek herbal versions of the drug?
While most herbal supplements that are said to match their medical couterparts in effectiveness are naturally met with a lot of skepticism by the medical community, I for one have witnessed first hand their effectiveness and life-changing abilities for men who suffer from impotence, low sex drive, inability to sustain erections, and general sexual and erectile dysfunction.
My Second Hand Experience with an Herbal Viagra Alternative Supplement
My significant other actually had a very positive experience with one such herbal alternative to Viagra, which I also noticed since I am his sexual partner. He described his experience with the supplement as having a heightened sensitivity in his penis, getting sexually excited much more easily, and more blood flow to his penis, making his erections last longer and get much harder.
He also said that when taking the herbal supplement and subsequently participating in sexual intercourse, he had much more intense sexual peaks (orgasms), than he did when he did not take the supplement that day.
Why Viagra's Safety Has Been Questioned in the Past
Viagra was approved for sale by the FDA in 1998. Right from the start, American pharmacists dispensed over 215,000 Viagra prescriptions within the first month Viagra was released for public sale, launching a media blitz and the subsequent skyrocketing of Viagra manufacturer Pfizer's stock.
The most notable and well publicized hazard of prescription Viagra has been the possibility of heart attack if your heart is not in the best condition, and if you are not physically fit or are at an age where heart attacks may become more probable.
While most deaths occurred in elderly men, this scare has prompted many men to seek natural alternatives and herbal supplements that provide results either comparable to Viagra or identical to Viagra, without the necessity for a prescription, doctors visit, or high expense of necessary dosages.
So, despite what your personal opinion may be on herbal supplements and natural equivalents to medically prescribed drugs, you can't deny the fact that there must be a reason for the rising popularity of herbal viagra alternatives. The reason is, it does work, and it does work very well for thousands of men. You just need to find the right one. |

Hormones, blood vessels, nerves, and muscles must all work together to cause an erection. Your brain starts an erection by sending nerve signals to the penis when it senses sexual stimulation or arousal. Touching may cause this arousal. Another trigger can be something you see or hear. Or it may simply be a sexual thought or dream. The nerve signals sent from the brain cause the muscles within the penis to relax and let blood flow into the spongy tissue within the penis. Blood collects in this tissue like water filling a sponge. As a result, the penis becomes larger and firmer, like an inflated balloon. The veins in the area then become closed off to keep blood from flowing out. After climax, or after the sexual arousal has passed, the veins open back up and blood flows back into the body. Due to the important role blood vessels play in this process, healthy blood vessels are needed for an erection to occur. |

Oral treatments
Viagra, like other medicines for ED, may be less effective in men with diabetes than in the non-diabetic population. However, it has been shown to be effective in men with ED and diabetes in clinical trials.
It is suitable for most men with diabetes, regardless of the type of diabetes they suffer from.
Cialis and Levitra have been shown to be effective in men with diabetes in clinical trials.
MUSE, Caverject and Viridal Duo
There are three different preparations of alprostadil that are administered directly into the penis:
- Viridal Duo and Caverject are injected into the penis.
- MUSE is a pellet that is inserted into the end of the penis.
Men opting for MUSE, Caverject or Viridal duo will require reasonable manual dexterity and eyesight to give themselves these treatments.
Caverject and Viridal Duo injections are effective in most men with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Men with diabetes may find them easy to use if they are already accustomed to giving themselves insulin injections.
MUSE is also suitable for men with diabetes.
Very obese men may find it difficult to see the penis to insert a MUSE applicator or to inject. Your partner may, however, be able to do this for you. |

In practice, operating on the potency overweight. It is the increased load on the heart, vessels, muscles, making it difficult to close and gradually make its reservations. Therefore, the man should have been signed, if necessary, to comply with diet or discharge dates.
One of the worst enemies - potency alcohol. Ancient doctors said : "Vino will bring, but also to prevent them." Alcohol is legal, but harmful effect on the spinal cord centers, which are responsible erect penis and ejaculation. Some men take to close spoons "to relax". Yes, it is known that small doses of alcohol relieve stress, can forget about themselves on bad terms with his wife, on the insecurity of life. So, it may have a "better" than usual. But each time to take spoons, a recipe for alcoholism. The only correct way to change - with his wife, make it an ally in bed, and not artificially drive themselves. Poor relations with his wife is not sufficient to fully relax and normally inflame. Aggrieved woman will not help his partner, and possibly do everything to make it difficult to normal proximity. Full-cooled to its "half" often ends invisible world, but a family battle lasting years. That couple shared household duties, the love of children, the friendship with a buddy or friend. And all of these conflicts weaken internal communications spouses, diminish the value of intimate proximity, along with those men and potency. |

Erectile dysfunction, sometimes called impotence, refers to a man's consistent inability to get or maintain an erection sufficient to have satisfactory sex. It does not mean a lack of sexual interest or desire or the occasional difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection that affects all men at some time in their life.
Normally, an erection occurs when your imagination or one or more senses (vision, hearing, touch, smell, taste) are stimulated and you become aroused. Your central nervous system sends nerve impulses that increase blood flow to your penis. Four requirements for a normal erection are:
- A properly functioning nervous system that sends the necessary signals to the penis.
- An intact system of blood vessels to allow blood to flow into and out of the penis.
- Normal smooth muscle in the penis, which must relax so the penis can fill with blood and enlarge.
- The ability to trap the blood in the penis so that it stays firm.
