Last Friday was a day I will never want to happen again. Early in the workday i was unloading some computers and monitors out of a van onto a truck bed headed for the dump. After throwing a couple of things onto the truck bed i lifted another PC case and was carrying it around to the front of the van when all of a sudden by back gave way and i set the PC case down. i tried to lift it again but i couldn't.
i felt a tightness in my spine that went from my hip to the top of my shoulder blades. I didn't hurt or feel anything for a minute. Then i started feeling tight and a slight ache came around into my lower back. I told my boss and then we went to tell the people in charge of workers compensation what had happen.
I go to the doctor, he tells me to come back Monday and we will check it again. He gave me some muscle relaxers and ibuprofen. I went back to work to get my things and headed home. I got into my car, drove 60 yards to wachovia. Got out of the car and before i got to the front bumper my legs locked up and i couldn't walk and my back felt like something was squeezing it. A lady at the bank stops and asks if I'm OK, i tell her that i don't know, I'm not sure whats going on. Then a guy from work pulls up, he asks me whats going on, i tell him i don't know. they leave, i then work myself back into the car and drive back to work.
I call someone up and tell them i cant walk, i probably cant drive, and I had yet been to the pharmacy to get my medicine. I tried getting out of the car when i got back to work. That didn't work because i needed something to lean on.
i get into the car thats taking me home. We get the medication and I'm on the way home. When I get out of the car my back pulls me to the ground like a ton of bricks and the more i fight it the more it hurts and pulls. I go down to my knees on the gravel and then pick myself up and dash for the door. I get in the house and lay on the couch and turn into a ball.
There is this rushing aching pain in my back and i try to move and it hurts. I'm on the couch, i need to get up and go to the bedroom. In order to get around i had to roll off the couch work myself up to being on all fours and crawl, sometimes i would pause for pain breaks or spasm. Friday night was horrible. Saturday was worse.
Thinking i had slept and i was all ready to go was a dream. There was no chance of walking Saturday. Getting out of the bed and going to the bathroom was thirty or forty minutes. I smoked far less cigarettes Friday and Saturday.
With youth and muscle relaxers by midnight Saturday i was walking. The medication needed time to get around my system. And for a short period of time i appreciated being able to walk again and be able to eat something in another room.
I have been on recovery now for a little over a week from the worst back injury I've had to date. I feel a little stiff after sitting or standing for a while. But i think i will be well again soon. Well enough to bowl before the seasons end. God knows I have to work, he also knows I have to bowl. So go on and heal my back. I am ready to bowl. |
