Task manager disabled by administrator

I wrote about it in the previous entry. The new wmf exploits going around the internet. It seems this thing has disabled my task manager. I could not get to it from control-alt-delete or right clicking on the task bar and going to task manager nor can I run taskmgr from run.

Luckly i found a fix for this and it requires a little editing the systems registry.

To fix this problem on an xp system you can simply download this registry entry file. After you download the zip file, open it up and run the EnableTM.reg file. This will fix your problem.hOnce your file name looks like  and run it to correct the problem.

If you would like to fix the problem manually by going into the systems registry follow these steps:

  • Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to:

HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System

  • In the right-pane, double-click DisableTaskMgr and set it's data to 0
